The article focuses on the proposal of rationalization of the transportation of magnesite in a mining company. The inclusion of a transportation process in a company’s logistics model provides a comprehensive view on the operation of a company as a whole. The application of generally applicable logistics principles may result in the increased efficiency of the transportation process. A part of this article deals with increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt system operation by proper dimensioning in terms of their capacity and rigidity. The main input of the rationalisation proposal is the analysis of technical parameters of belt conveyors. The article points out possible ways how to improve the transportation process within exploitation and processing of raw materials by applying cost-efficient tools for designing the logistics systems. A general procedure of logistics system designing is divided into five fundamental steps, particularly the project identification, paradigm selection, logistics system analysis, project synthesis, and project evaluation. The contribution of this article consists in the practical area, in the form of applying the logistics approach when designing the logistics system of transportation of magnesite in a mining company. © 2015, Technical University of Kosice. The Design of experiment (DOE) method was used in this paper to rubber conveyor belt tension testing. Using DOE method were from experimentally obtained data established effects of factors and interactions that affect the value of the measured strength and also were determined regression models, which apply input and output variables to the relation. Belt conveyance belongs to the continual transport systems characteristic with high-level conveying performances. Belt conveyors are of significant importance in the transportation of various types of materials in the industries like engineering, metallurgy and construction. The fundamental and the most expensive component of belt conveyors is the conveyor belt which is, during the operation on the belt conveyor, exposed to number of various loads that evoke the process of conveyor belt wear and damage. Lifetime of conveyor belts, which is the determining parameter for the belt conveyance economy and efficiency, is very important for the practice. Issues regarding the conveyor belt lifetime should be solved applying also the methods of operation analysis, especially the linear programming and the renewal theory that uses the theory of probability and mathematic statistics. The objective of our research was to determine the optimal lifetime (optimal performance duration) of a belt conveyor, applying the renewal theory, whereas the research was based on the cost approach of the renewal process. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. The interplant transport of mineral raw materials plays an important role in the mining process carried out in mining companies. An important part of this transport is a belt conveyor, utilised in underground mining as well as in open pits. The article is focused on suggestions regarding modifications of belt conveyor construction parameters which can contribute to optimization and innovation within the mineral raw materials transportation. Importance, or the effect, the strength of the impact of modifications of the selected parameters on the system optimization is assessed by the method of analytic hierarchy process. The article contains the complex knowledge obtained from the analysis of the belt conveyor system used in the limestone excavation and processing. © 2015, Technical University of Kosice.
