The implementation of the Remote Sensing in the hydrogeological characterization of the Basin of the Segura River through Remote Thermal Tomography has permitted to determine the areas of a major probability of the aquifer zones presence, as well as the areas of important géothermie potential. Additionally there were elaborated proposals of the modification of the hydrogeological zones limits that would permit to improve the configuration of the surrounding water masses, as well as to locate the sea water intrusion zones and the groundwater discharge zones. The paper describes the current national activity on dam construction in 2007-2009 period. The number of large dams under construction In Spain continues growing on a good rhythm, being greater than In 2003-2006 period.


The present study analyzes the suitability of the formulas proposed in EHE, Eurocode 2 and ACI Building Code 318 for crack control in reinforced concrete by testing 14 full-scale beams subjected to pure bending. It also explores the effect of varying parameters such as diameter, steel ratio and compression reinforcement arrangement and analyzes the fit between the above theoretical procedures and the experimental findings (less favourable than expected in some cases). The article also discusses the considerable impact of certain parameters, such as steel ratio, on crack control, and the scant effect of parameters such as diameter, reinforcement spacing and the arrangement of compression reinforcement. Pursuant to the results obtained in this study, possible variations on existing formulas are evaluated, specifically on the formula exhibiting a tendency that came closest to reflecting the test results (EC-2), with a view to improving the fit between that formula and the experimental results.

In this short communication a synthesis of the activities of ICOLD during the years 2006-2009 is presented, making a special mention to the 80 Anniversary of ICOLD, to the Declaration on the hydropower in Africa to the V World Water Forum of Istanbul, and to the third Report of United Nations on the Development of World Water Resources in the World.


The floods in Spain are the most Important natural hazard and they constitute a serious economic and social problem. In the paper the actions and measures in front of the floods and to mitigate their damages, are described, under a perspective of an integrated flood management (IFM). The new 2007 European Directive on the "Assessment and management of flood risks" is analyzed, pointing out the opportunity that it represents, for the implementation of no-structural measures with restrictions of the land use of the floodplalns.

Bridges have an inevitable impact on the landscape. They are an opportunity to create sculptures to communicate feelings, ideas and evocations to the onlooker. Engineers who are aware of this opportunity for transcendence give a new dimension to their structures and to their profession's role in society.


The paper describes in what way have been developed the ICOLD's Executive Annual Meeting and the International Congress on Large Dams. What activities are been developed by the different Technical Committees in which there has been participation of the members of the National Spanish Committee on Large Dams (SPANCOLD), and in what activities, and what has been the degree of participation, of the Spanish delegation.

A methodology is set out for quantifying the financial resources required in order to restore the quality of urban pavement that have deteriorated over time. A set of road surfaces, or road surfaces in a particular area of a town, which may be the whole town, is chosen and a sample is taken to represent it with a certain error margin and confidence level. The defects in all the road surfaces forming the chosen sample are analysed and, more importantly, quantified, and the findings are extrapolated to the total population. The methodology presented also allows preventive maintenance to be scheduled in any one area of a city. Finally a road surface quality index is established allowing us to analyse quantified variations in road surface quality over time. Thus we can establish a means of measuring the quality of maintenance carried out on our road surfaces. The paper highlights the major effect on road service life of works in which the pavement is opened up and restored for the installation or repair of underground utilities under urban streets. It then analyses the technical and economic feasibility of installing utility tunnels as a possible solution to avoid the effects of such works, describing a methodology for monitoring and control applied with considerable success in Madrid in 2000-2003. A methodology is proposed for reducing the number of roadworks on public thoroughfares by means of integral maintenance operations. Finally, given the large number of agents involved in urban roadworks, a management model is proposed as a means of coordinating all the work done on such roads.
