Here, we report a novel use of the ethanolic leaf extract of Centella asiatica to produce gold nanoparticles by reduction of AuCl4 - ions. The phytochemicals present in the leaf extract served as effective reducing and capping agent. The gold nanoparticles obtained were characterized by UV-visible spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). TEM studies showed the particles to be of various shapes and sizes. Selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern and high-resolution TEM image confirmed a fcc phase and high crystallinity of the particles. The XRD patterns showed a (1 1 1) preferential orientation of the gold nanoparticles. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements showed the GNPs having a coating of phenolic compounds indicating a possible role of biomolecules responsible for capping and efficient stabilization of the gold nanoparticles. As no synthetic reagents were used in this method, the synthesized gold nanoparticles have potential for application in bio-molecular imaging and therapy. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. The delivery of affordable and equitable cancer care is one of India's greatest public health challenges. Public expenditure on cancer in India remains below US®10 per person (compared with more than US®100 per person in high-income countries), and overall public expenditure on health care is still only slightly above 1% of gross domestic product. Out-of-pocket payments, which account for more than three-quarters of cancer expenditures in India, are one of the greatest threats to patients and families, and a cancer diagnosis is increasingly responsible for catastrophic expenditures that negatively affect not only the patient but also the welfare and education of several generations of their family. We explore the complex nature of cancer care systems across India, from state to government levels, and address the crucial issues of infrastructure, manpower shortages, and the pressing need to develop cross-state solutions to prevention and early detection of cancer, in addition to governance of the largely unregulated private sector and the cost of new technologies and drugs. We discuss the role of public insurance schemes, the need to develop new political mandates and authority to set priorities, the necessity to greatly improve the quality of care, and the drive to understand and deliver cost-effective cancer care programmes. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Intrinsic radio-sensitivity is the determinant of differential response of tumours to low LET ionising radiations. The probabilistic DNA fibril both model shows intrinsic radio-sensitivity factor [I] as function of nuclear diameter (Nd) and intra cellular hydrogen ion concentration [H+]. Linking probabilities of lethal and sub-lethal events to [I] further results in equations which show the LQ parameters namely alpha and beta are functions of (Nd), [H+] and repair constant (μ) mu. We report a novel silk-gold nanocomposite based nerve conduit successfully tested in a neurotmesis grade sciatic nerve injury model in rats over a period of eighteen months. The conduit was fabricated by adsorbing gold nanoparticles onto silk fibres and transforming them into a nanocomposite sheet by electrospinning which is finally given a tubular structure by rolling on a stainless steel mandrel of chosen diameter. The conduits were found to promote adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells in vitro and did not elicit any toxic or immunogenic responses in vivo. We also report for the first time, the monitoring of muscular regeneration post nerve conduit implantation by recording motor unit potentials (MUPs) through needle electromyogram. Pre-seeding the conduits with Schwann cells enhanced myelination of the regenerated tissue. Histo-morphometric and electrophysiological studies proved that the nanocomposite based conduits pre-seeded with Schwann cells performed best in terms of structural and functional regeneration of severed sciatic nerves. The near normal values of nerve conduction velocity (50 m/sec), compound muscle action potential (29.7 mV) and motor unit potential (133 μV) exhibited by the animals implanted with Schwann cell loaded nerve conduits in the present study are superior to those observed in previous reports with synthetic materials as well as collagen based nerve conduits. Animals in this group were also able to perform complex locomotory activities like stretching and jumping with excellent sciatic function index (SFI) and led a normal life. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
