A panel discussion was organized on stickies during the TAPPI PEERS conference, held in Portland, OR., US, from October 2-5, 2011. Gilles Dorris from FPInnovations, Canada, offered a title that provided detailed information regarding the difficulty involved in dealing with stickies. He reviewed methods developed at FPInnovations for measuring macrostickies and microstickies. He informed that his company was working on measuring wet and dry tackiness of stickies at different temperatures. Shisei Goto from Nippon Paper Industries, Japan, was another speaker who relied on his earlier two presentations at the Research Forum on Recycling to inform about stickies behavior after deinked pulp (DIP) and thermomechanical pulp (TMP) were delivered to the paper machine. He used photomicrographs of stickies deposited on the surface of quartz crystal to provide such information. Source

A review of recycling-related papers presented at the TAPPI PEERS Conference, held October 2-5, 2011, in Portland, is presented. Rutz presented the use of Microfilter for paper mill. Microfilter is a rotating drum with a 10 μm to 1000 μm opening filter cloth that is selected depending on the application. Rissanen and co-researchers use flow cytometry (FCM) to measure size and shape of colloidal pitch particles in pretreated groundwood pulp samples. Two pretreatment methods were compared, centrifuge and dynamic drainage jar (DDJ). Korkko and researchers measured ink content of deinked pulps using a spectrophotometer at wavelengths of 700 nm and 950 nm. Undeinked pulp, nine deinked pulps with varying material loss, and hyperwash pulps were considered for the study. Makinen and colleagues explored fiber recovery from screen rejects by use of froth flotation. Other recycling topics covered during TAPPI PEERS included a mill optimization session by Neale Fetterly, which provided general approaches and case histories. Source

Macrostickies removal efficiency was measured in a Board Mill to track brown stock screening improvements by using smaller slots and other system modifications. The agglomerated microstickies in the feed and accept lines to the fine pressure screens in the system were measured using the new Pulmac Classifier. Preliminary data indicate that the primary screens produce microstickies when the slot width was reduced from 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) to 0.2 mm (0.008 inch). Two common sense rules are proposed for screening system design considerations. We recommend that the conventional cascade system be replaced by the forward flow arrangement in compliance with the two rules. Microstickies in the headbox and white water are also being monitored to control effect on paper machine runnability and product quality. Results will be reported in future. Source
