Al2O3-ZrB2-SIC composite ceramics (AZS) were prepared by hot pressed sintering (sintering temperature of 1 800 °C,sintering pressure of 20 MPa,and soaking time of 1 h) in order to improve hot mechanical properties of Al2O3 based ceramics. Effect of ZrB2 addition on the hot bending strength and thermal shock resistance of Al2O3 based ceramics was studied. The results show that: (1) the second phase ZrB2 can effectively Improve the hot bending strength and retention ratio of hot strength;at 1 000 and 1 200°C,the composite with 20 vol% ZrB2 has the highest hot bending strength and the composite with 24 vol% ZrB2 has the highest retention ratio of hot strength; (2) AZS has better thermal shock resistance than the pure Al2O3ceramics; after 100°C quenching, the composite with 20 vol% ZrB2 has the highest residual strength,which is 17.2% higher than that of the pure Al2O3 ceramics; after the quenching of 300°C and 500 C, the composites with 24 vol% ZrB2 have the highest residual strength,which is 35.3% and 20.9% higher than that of the pure Al2O3ceramics, respectively.
