PPCI(partially premixed compression ignition)combustion in a boosted six-cylinder heavy duty diesel engine was realized by adjusting the injection timing of single injection and rate of EGR. The effects of injection timing, EGR, injection pressure and load rate on combustion and heat release pattern were studied. The influential factors of premixed duration and ignition delay and its regularity were investigated. Results show that PPCI possesses both premixed combustion and low temperature combustion characteristics in simultaneously reducing soot and NOx emissions. However, the low temperature combustion and diluted mixture may bring the incomplete combustion. HC and CO emissions increase dramatically and fuel consumption gets worse at late injection. Under this partially premixed combustion patterns, the effect of injection pressure on soot and NOx emission is unobvious. When engine load rate is increased to 50% and above, diffusion combustion occurs in early injection modes, leading to the increased NOx and soot emissions. Source

Using the endoscope, the effect of EGR rate, pilot injection timing and pilot injection mass on combustion and emissions of a 6-cylinder, common rail heavy-duty diesel engine was studied. Endoscope was used to measure the flame images in cylinder, and two-color method was used to obtain soot concentration distribution. Results show that delaying the pilot injection timing decreases the peak in-cylinder pressure, the two-stage ignition phenomena of the pilot injection combustion disappears, flame brightness is increased, NOx and PM emissions are decreased. With the increase of pilot injection fuel mass, heat release rate and flame brightness of pilot injection combustion are increased, NOx and HC emissions are increased, and PM and CO emissions are decreased. With the increase of EGR rate, intensity of the premixed combustion is decreased, the beginning of main combustion is delayed, NOx emission is decreased notably, while PM, HC and CO emissions are increased. Endoscope can conveniently and accurately observe the combustion characteristics in cylinder under real operating conditions. ©, 2015, Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines.
