The microstructures and properties of high manganese steel liners produced by sand-lined metal mold and common sand mold were investigated in the present study. The results show that the amount of carbide was obviously decreased by the sand-lined metal mold. The impact toughness can be as high as 94 J/cm2, significantly higher than that of common liner produced by the sand mold in the same condition. Besides, abrasion test shows that the weight loss in the impact-abrasion test for the liner produced by the sand-lined metal mold was decreased 36% in the as-cast and 28% in the heat treated conditions compared with that of sand mold casting. The improvement in the abrasion resistance is believed to be related to relatively high mechanical properties as well as decreased shrinkage defects and its high density of the liners by sand-lined metal mold. ©, 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.
