The study was led in order to improve the competitiveness of the sugarcane industry in Côte d'Ivoire through the reduction of the duration of the sugarcane selection. It based on an assessment of sugarcane varieties from 1990 to 2008 on the site of SUCAF-CI/Ferké 2, in the Northern area. So, 47 trials were carried out over 5 years duration. 154 varieties were tested, including 87 commercials varieties and 67 preselected varieties "FR". At the early harvest season, 127 varieties were tested including 69 commercials varieties and 58 preselected varieties. Whereas at the late season, 46 varieties were tested, including 30 commercials and 16 preselected. The decisive factor of the evaluation was, in the one hand, the sucrose's yields and in the other hand, the resistance or tolerance to the tropical stem borer (Eldana saccharina) and the smut disease (Ustilago scitaminea). As results, 37 varieties were selected at the early season and 4 varieties at the late harvest season. The study proposes a process of selection in only one experimental stage during 3 years, followed by industrial test in 3 years. So the screening of sugarcane varieties in Côte d'Ivoire could be possible in 6 years instead 11 to 15 years previously. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2012.
