Sulfur is well known as an effective agent against Oidium (Erysiphe necator) on grape vine. For ecological vine growing it is absolutely essential. Nevertheless there are some reports about low efficacy when using the registered doses. With respect to the use of Wettable Sulfur 80 WG this paper illustrates the different situations of registration in some European countries in comparison to the product doses registered in Germany. Comparing the different registrations allows a broader perspective and may point out options for improving the current dosing system and adapting the doses in growth stages of high sensitivity against the fungus. This approach contributes to a sustainable use of sulfur as required by European legislation and National Action Plans as well. In addition to its relevance for ecological wine growing Sulfur is most important as tool for strategies of prevention of fungicide resistance. The paper outlines the need and consequences of a change of the unit of dose from kg/ha ground area to kg/10 000 m2 leaf wall area for Wettable Sulfur.

Spray deposits are investigated in order to describe the application quality in canopies. Such measurements are labour and time consuming and researchers often prefer to investigate bulk samples. This reduces workload and costs but leads to a loss of information because it is not possible to describe the variability of deposits. It is recommended to document the sampling position of each individual sampling unit which in addition enables to describe the spatial distribution of the deposits. It is common to calculate the mean deposit as characteristic parameter. Instead of the mean we propose to use the proportion of targets with deposits lower than 3% or 5% of the nominal dose (kg/10 000m2). This value seems to be more appropriate because efficacy occurs on individual targets.

The diagnosis of phytopathogenic agents has to be justiciable. Quality management gains increasing importance. In preparation of accreditation of the diagnostic laboratory at the Agricultural Public Service Center Rheinhessen-Nahe-Hunsrück in Bad Kreuznach the extraction of cyst nematodes from soil samples by means of a MEKU-soil extractor was validated according to the principles of the German Accreditation Association (DAkkS). The results achieved with test procedure were analyzed according to the parameters analytical sensitivity, analytical specification, selectivity, repeatability and reproducibility. The limit of acceptance kept the conditions of the quality control plan. Therefore the test procedure is qualified for diagnosis of quarantine organisms according to the specifications of DAkkS. Continuous participation in laboratory comparative tests ensures a long term, high level quality standard. © 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
