Background: Cancer is one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity today, with more than 10 million new cases and more than 6 million deaths each year worldwide. Globally Oral Cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer related death. India accounts for 86% of the world′s oral cancer cases. Often it proceeds by pre cancerous conditions and lesions. In search for biological markers with diagnostic value, we investigated serum glycoconjugates like protein bound hexoses, fucose and sialic acid in these diseases. Materials and Methods: For this Study 27 newly diagnosed Oral leukoplakia, 27 OSMF and 26 Oral Cancer patients, 40 healthy controls who are non tobacco users and 40 healthy controls who are tobacco users were selected. In all these groups we estimated serum glycoconjugates. Results: We observed no difference in serum glycoconjugates levels between tobacco and non tobacco controls ( P > 0.05), but very high levels in oral cancer, Leukoplakia and oral sub mucous fibrosis (OSMF) patients ( P < 0.001) when compared to control groups. Fucose levels were significant ( P < 0.05) of all the glycoconjugates between OSMF and Leukoplakia. Conclusion: The serum glycoconjugates whose levels were very high in OSMF, Leukoplakia and Oral Cancer, do have a significant diagnostic and prognostic value in these diseases. Source

Background: Thyroid enlargement is one of the common problems in patients presenting at outpatients department of surgery especially in females. Aims: To determine the role of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis and management of thyroid disease. Material and Method: This prospective study was carried out in Surgery department during the year 2010 to 2012. On 160 patients who underwent thyroid surgery after complete evaluation by history, clinical examination, Thyroid profile, Thyroid Scintigraphy, Ultrasound neck and FNAC. Histopathology of specimen was done after surgery. Results: Male to female ratio of the patients was found to be 1:2.8. Most common lesion recorded was benign nodule (70.63%) and malignant lesions were 29.37% in FNAC. In histopathology, the benign nodules were 63.13% and malignant cases were 36.87%. Sensitivity of FNAC was 69.64% and specificity was 92.31%. Conclusion: High sensitivity and specificity of FNAC in cases of thyroid lesions makes it first line investigation on most cases of palpable thyroid lesions. Source

Background: Retinol binding protein-4 (BP-4) a new adipocytokine, specifically binds to retinol, through experimental studies, reported its link between obesity and insulin resistance (IR). But till date no studies are available on influence of genetic predisposition of diabetes on RBP-4 expression. Hence, we aimed to study the influence of genetic predisposition of diabetes on the serum RBP-4 and its role in development of IR and diabetes in genetically high risk population. Materials and Methods: Healthy non diabetic individuals (age 18 to 22) were grouped into Group I: Control (n = 81), whose parents are non diabetic, non hypertensive and does not have any family history of coronary heart diseases. Group II: (n = 157) with one of their parents diabetic and Group III: (n = 47) with both parents diabetic. In all the participants, we estimated fasting serum RBP-4, insulin and glucose. Homeostasis model for assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and homeostasis model for assessment-beta cell dysfunction (HOMA-B) were calculated from fasting serum insulin and glucose levels. Results: In this study, we observed significantly higher RBP-4 levels 12.71 ± 2.3 in Group-II and 13.25 ± 2 in Group-III, respectively when compared to Group-I 11.4 ± 1.8 (P < 0.01). RBP-4 showed a significantly strong positive correlation with plasma insulin, glucose and HOMA-IR in genetically high risk population (group II and III) P < 0.01. Linear regression analysis revealed a strong positive association of RBP-4 with parental diabetes even after adjusting for BMI, age and sex (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.089-1.40). Conclusion: Higher serum RBP-4 and its positive correlation with Insulin, glucose, and HOMA-IR in healthy non diabetic participants of genetically high risk population, indicating its role as predictor for the onset of diabetes in coming future. Aims: To study the prevalence of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacteriaceae and coresistance to other commonly used antibiotics from the Bhopal region of Central India. Settings and Design: A prospective study was conducted from September 2011 to August 2012 in Microbiology Department of our tertiary health care center. Materials and Methods: A total of 1044 Enterobacteriaceae isolates were recovered from various specimens. ESBL production was detected by using Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) that described the phenotypic confirmatory test along with routine antibiotic susceptibility testing. Statistical Analysis: Two-tailed Z-test. Results: Escherichia coli was the most common isolate (65.32%). ESBL production was confirmed in 504 (48.27%) isolates. The isolates of E. coli (50.14%) were the most common ESBL producers. Maximum ESBL isolates were obtained from urine samples (52.28%) and male patients (52.54%). Sensitivity to imipenem was 100% followed by piperacillin-tazobactam (89.28%), meropenem (87.5%), and amikacin (83.92%). Significant resistance was detected against trimethoprim- sulfomethoxazole, fluoroquinolones, and gentamicin. Conclusion: This is the only study conducted from Central India and shows high prevalence of ESBL production among Enterobacteriaceae. Imipenem seems to be more sensitive than meropenem. Piperacillin-tazobactam combination was found to be the best among the β-lactam-β-lactamase inhibitor combinations. Prevalence of ESBL producers were more in males than females. Source

The present study is an attempt to evaluate personality Traits of adolescent boys. We have compared personality trait of normal weight, overweight & underweight adolescent & effect of counseling on their personality. A random sample of 530 adolescent boys (one private English Medium and one Government Hindi Medium School) between the ages of 10-18 years during the period of August 2008 to August 2009 constituted the material for this study. Weight, Height and BMI and personality trait were evaluated. Overweight adolescent boys were found to be more abstract thinking, expedient, depressive, controlled, relaxed and sound follower. Post counseling they were found to be more concrete thinking, tense, conscientious and zestful. Normal weight adolescent boys were found to be more reserved, aggressive, concrete thinking, excitable, shy and relaxed on pre counselling data analysis. Post counseling data they were found to be milder and socially bold and this change was statistically significant. Underweight adolescent boys were found to be more reserved, concrete thinking, phlegmatic, aggressive, self reliant and relaxed. Post counselling data analysis showed statistically significant changes and they were found to be more abstract thinking, group dependent and sound follower. Conclusion: Adolescent psychological need should be assessed and there counselling should be done as per their need because personality pattern of overweight, underweight and normal weight adolescent varies.
