De Dietrich Process Systems has a long history in the recovery of nitric and sulfuric acids for all different types of nitration processes. Most of these recovery operations are tailor-made designs and provide the most efficient solutions to our customers. We fabricate the equipment needed for these operations from highly corrosion resistant borosilicate glass and glass-lined steel. An improved system to recycle acid in a DNT manufacturing facility is discussed. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The glass packing QVF DURAPACK® was developed to use the advantages of structured mass transfer packings, especially when handling corrosive media. To match up with the latest developments for sheet metal packings, further optimization for liquid-liquid separation processes was performed for the QVF DURAPACK®. The complex geometry of structured packings and the wall thickness of glass sheets complicate the numerical investigations. The modeling strategy is presented, and the limitations of CFD tools are given. The experimental and numerical results show similar trends as known for perforated metal structures. The extraction efficiency of the packing prototype could also be reproduced with the column design tool LLECMOD. To optimize the glass packing QVF DURAPACK® with regard to extraction efficiency, a detailed understanding of the hydrodynamic behavior is crucial. Therefore, computa-tional fluid dynamics is used and the challenges in modeling are discussed. The extraction column design tool LLECMOD was used to compare calculated mass transfer results of the developed prototype to the experimental data. Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The invention relates to a method for reprocessing waste acid from methods for producing nitro-aromatics, in particular for producing dinitrotoluene (DNT) or trinitrotoluene (TNT), to recover concentrated and purified sulfuric acid and nitric acid, wherein in a first stage, the waste acid is separated in a stripping column countercurrently with water vapor from the bottom of the stripping column into at least one vapor phase, which contains nitric acid and possibly nitro-organics, and a pre-concentrated sulfuric acid, and the vapor phase and the pre-concentrated sulfuric acid are condensed and/or reprocessed in downstream method stages, wherein in the first stage of the method, in addition to the stripping, according to the invention the nitric acid contained in the stripping vapor is concentrated in the presence of additional concentrated sulfuric acid so that nitric acid in a highly concentrated form suitable for feeding back into the nitriding process is obtained directly in the first stage.
