We demonstrated room temperature high power CW operation of quantum cascade lasers at 10.3 and 10.7 μm wavelengths. The CW output power reached 1.15W, and the wall-plug-efficiency reached 3.7% at 15 °C. © 2012 IEEE.

The utilization of the broad gain bandwidth available from quantum cascade (QC) devices is considered. The performance of homogeneous and heterogeneous QC gain media is explored in an external-cavity configuration.
