In continuation of previous work on utilizing rice husks, this study aimed to prepare mesoporous activated carbons using residues of sodium hydroxide-pretreated RHs, and then examine their dye adsorption performance. The influences of the activation temperature and activation time on the surface area, pore volume, and pore radius of the activated carbon were investigated based on nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and transmission electron microscopy. The adsorptive behavior of the mesoporous activated carbons obtained under optimum preparation conditions was evaluated using methyleneblue as the model adsorbate. The adsorption kinetics was studied by pseudo-first-and pseudo-second-order models, and the adsorption isotherms were studied by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm were found to fit well the adsorption characteristics of the as-prepared mesoporous activated carbons. Thermodynamic data of the adsorption process were also obtained to elucidate the adsorption thermo-chemistry between the activated carbons produced from NaOH-pretreated RHs and MB molecules. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Graphene (Gr)/InNbO4 composite with visible light response was fabricated by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra (DRS), respectively. The results indicated that InNbO4 particles with monoclinic type mainly distributed on the Gr sheet uniformly. The samples had good visible light response. Photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) was conducted under the visible light irradiation (>400nm) in order to evaluate the photoactivity of this photocatalyst. The kinetic constant of MB removal with Gr/InNbO4 (0.0346min-1) was 1.87 times that with InNbO4 (0.0185min-1). The enhanced photocatalytic performance of Gr/InNbO4 was attributed to the improved adsorption performance and the separation efficiency of the carriers. With Gr/InNbO4 as the photocatalyst the OH radicals be another type of oxidant in the photocatalytic process in addition to holes and electrons on Gr transporting from InNbO4 participated the oxidation of MB adsorbed on Gr. Overall, the result of this work could provide a new way of the construction of a visible-light-driven photocatalyst with high performance. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

Although the coefficient-relation of the even-order sub-filters in the Farrow structure has been revealed and adopted in the weighted-least-squares (WLS) design of even-order finite-impulse-response (FIR) variable fractional-delay (VFD) digital filters in the literature, it has never been exploited in implementing low-complexity VFD filters. This paper aims topropose a low-complexity implementation structure through exploiting the coefficient-relation such that the coefficient-relation is not only utilized in the design process, but also utilized in the low-complexity implementation; formulate the minimax design of an even-order VFD filter through exploiting the coefficient-relation;propose a new two-stage scheme called increase-then- decrease scheme for optimizing the sub-filter orders so as to minimize the VFD digital filter complexity. With the above three advances, an even-order VFD filter can not only be designed and but also be implemented efficiently by exploiting the coefficient-relation. We will use a design example to illustrate the low complexity and high design accuracy. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a bi-minimax method for designing an odd-order variable fractional-delay (VFD) finite-impulse-response (FIR) digital filter such that both the peak errors of its variable frequency response (VFR) and VFD response can be simultaneously suppressed. The bi-minimax design iteratively minimizes a mixed error function involving both the VFR-peak-error and VFD-peak-error subject to the second-order-cone (SOC) constraints on the VFR errors and linear-programming (LP) constraints on the VFD errors. As compared with the existing SOC-based minimax design that minimizes the VFR-peak-error only, this odd-order bi-minimax design suppresses the VFD-peak-error and flattens both the VFR errors and VFD errors simultaneously. Consequently, both the two errors are made nearly equi-ripple (bi-equiripple). An example is given for showing the simultaneous suppression of the two kinds of peak errors and verifying the effectiveness of the odd-order bi-minimax design approach. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Photoinduced diffraction grating is theoretically investigated in a three-level ladder-type hybrid artificial molecule comprised of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP). The SQD and the MNP are coupled via the Coulomb interaction. The probe absorption vanishes under the action of a strong coupling field, indicating an effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Based on this EIT effect, diffraction grating is achievable when a standing-wave coupling field is applied. It turns out that the efficiency of diffraction grating is greatly improved due to the existence of the MNP. Furthermore, the diffraction efficiency can be controlled by tuning the interaction strength between the SQD and the MNP. Nearly pure phase grating is obtained, showing high transmissivity and high diffraction efficiency up to 33%. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

Selective oxidation of alcohols is a fundamental and significant transformation for the large-scale production of fine chemicals, UV and visible light driven photocatalytic systems for alcohol oxidation have been developed, however, the long wavelength near infrared (NIR) and infrared (IR) light have not yet fully utilized by the present photocatalytic systems. Herein, we reported carbon quantum dots (CQDs) can function as an effective near infrared (NIR) light driven photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. Based on the NIR light driven photo-induced electron transfer property and its photocatalytic activity for H2O2 decomposition, this metal-free catalyst could realize the transformation from benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with high selectivity (100%) and conversion (92%) under NIR light irradiation. HO is the main active oxygen specie in benzyl alcohol selective oxidative reaction confirmed by terephthalic acid photoluminescence probing assay (TA-PL), selecting toluene as the substrate. Such metal-free photocatalytic system also selectively converts other alcohol substrates to their corresponding aldehydes with high conversion, demonstrating a potential application of accessing traditional alcohol oxidation chemistry. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.
