Fuzziness is inherent in decision data and decision making process. In this paper, interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) sets are used to capture fuzziness in multiattribute decision making (MADM) problems. The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology for solving MADM problems with both ratings of alternatives on attributes and weights being expressed with IVIF sets. In this methodology, a weighted absolute distance between IF sets is defined using weights of IF sets. Based on the concept of the relative closeness coefficients, we construct a pair of nonlinear fractional programming models which can be transformed into two simpler auxiliary linear programming models being used to calculate the relative closeness coefficient intervals of alternatives to the IVIF positive ideal solution, which can be employed to generate ranking order of alternatives based on the concept of likelihood of interval numbers. In view of the theoretical significance and practical value of graph cuts, the image segmentation methods based on graph cuts are reviewed in this paper. Firstly, the basic principle of image segmentation method based on graph cuts is analyzed in detail, which mainly focuses on the relation between graph cuts and energy minimization involving both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Secondly, the steps of image segmentation methods based on graph cuts are generalized as designing energy function, constructing graph, and minimum cut/maximum flow approaches. Thirdly, the current status of image segmentation methods based on graph cuts is combed and commented. Finally, the future for these segmentation methods is pointed out.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a linear programming methodology for solving multiattribute group decision making problems using intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) sets. In this methodology, IF sets are constructed to capture fuzziness in decision information and decision making process. The group consistency and inconsistency indices are defined on the basis of pairwise comparison preference relations on alternatives given by the decision makers. An IF positive ideal solution (IFPIS) and weights which are unknown a priori are estimated using a new auxiliary linear programming model, which minimizes the group inconsistency index under some constraints. The distances of alternatives from the IFPIS are calculated to determine their ranking order. Moreover, some properties of the auxiliary linear programming model and other generalizations or specializations are discussed in detail. Validity and applicability of the proposed methodology are illustrated with the extended air-fighter selection problem and the doctoral student selection problem. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. The quality of plane layout design of the disc cutters for the full-face rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) directly affects the balance of force distribution on the cutter head during the excavating. Various layout patterns have been adopted in practice during the layout design of the disc cutters. Considering the engineering technical requirements and the corresponding structure design requirements of the cutter head, this study formulates a nonlinear multi-objective mathematical model with multiple constraints for the disc cutters plane layout design, and analyses the characteristics of a multi-spiral layout pattern, a dynamic star layout pattern and a stochastic layout pattern. And then a genetic algorithm is employed to solve a disc cutters' multi-spiral layout problem, and a cooperative co-evolutionary genetic algorithm (CCGA) is utilized to solve a disc cutters' star or stochastic layout problems. The emphasis was put on the study of superiority of three different layout patterns. Finally, an instance of the disc cutters' plane layout design was solved by the proposed methods using three different kinds of layout patterns. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the method of combining the mathematical model with the algorithms, and the pros and cons of the three layout patterns. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. To address the problem of removing impulsive noise with different density from colour images, a new filtering algorithm is proposed based on noise estimation as well as adaptive scalar (SMF) and vector median filter (VMF). Two-level noise estimation scheme is adopted for noise detection, where the first-level estimation is based on maximum and minimum intensity value of each colour channel, and the second-level estimation uses weighted directional operators. For noise restoration, the uncorrupted pixels are remained unchanged, and the corrupted pixels of low-to-medium density are restored by the double weighted VMF, where the term double weighted means that the pixels' spatial distance and magnitude value are weighted together for the vector ordering in the computation of vector median filtering. In addition, the corrupted pixels of high density are restored by the SMF based on M estimator and the neighbourhood processed pixels. According to the estimated noise density, the proposed SMF and VMF are switched adaptively. The experimental results show that the new algorithm can filter the noise effectively while protecting the image colour, contrast and fine details well for the impulsive noise of different density (even as high as 99%). © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
