The original casting process of the rear axle housing of excavator was simulated by the simulation software AnyCasting, of which results show the casting defects, such as inclusions, shrinkage, shrinkage cavity and cracks etc, easily occurred in the casting. The results of simulation basically accorded with the actual defects. Against the disadvantages of the original process, optimized measures were adopted in following aspects: gating system and riser design, layout of chills, transition of fillet, pouring time adjustment and coating improvement. After optimization, the probability of defects occurring decreased greatly and the technological yield increased.

The reasonable process schemes were determined by simulating the filling process and temperature field variation for crown, band and blade casting. The internal chemical compositions of three kinds of castings were determined according to the standards of Three Gorges project. The castings quality can meet requirement of standards by reasonable molding process, smelting process, pouring process, heat treatment and processing technology.
