The electrical conductivity of semiconductor CdS films (d ≤ 1 μm) having (0001)S and (0001)Cd polar faces has been measured as a function of temperature at different degrees of adsorption of O2, NO2, and N2O molecules. Adsorption spectroscopy has been used to identify bulk and surface electronic centers in a series of states with a wide range of ionization energies: Et = 0.14–2.21 eV. In contrast to the bulk centers, which have a quasi-continuous energy spectrum characteristic of CdS, the surface adsorption electronic centers have a discrete energy spectrum. The ionization energy of the electronic centers of adsorption origin in CdS + O2, CdS + NO2, and CdS + N2O structures has been measured for the first time at both polarities of the CdS faces and has been shown to depend on the chemistry of the adsorbate and the polarity of the film face. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Aim. To comparatively study the clinical manifestations, sexual and HLA-B51 associations in patients with Behcet's disease (BD) in two ethnic groups. Subjects and methods. The authors examined 143 patients with the valid diagnosis of BD who were divided into 2 groups: 1) 85 patients, the dwellers of Dagestan (a multiethnic cohort), 63 men and 22 women (mean age 29±7.4 years); 2) 58 Russian men and women (mean age 33±11.7 years). Results. Two major criteria for BD, such as aphthous stomatitis and external genital ulcers, were found with the same frequency. Panuveitis and angiitis of the retina were diagnosed more frequently in the Dagestani population with BD than in the Russians. Out of the minor criteria for BD, the incidence of lower limb deep venous thrombosis was 23% for the Dagestanis versus 3% for the Russians. Arterial thromboses and pulmonary artery aneurysms became causes of death in 4 in 5 men aged 19-23 years from their Dagestani ancestry. HLA B51 (B marker) was found in the dwellers of Dagestan: in 70% of the men and 40% of the women who had BD. Conclusion. BD runs a more severe course in male patients and is characterized by severe eye diseases and the systematic pattern of the process at young age. Gender-specific and genetic aspects call for further comparative investigations on large ethnic patient cohorts of other ancestries.

Aim. To study special characteristics and prognostic value of cardiac remodeling in patients with unstable angina (UA). Material. Throughout 2 years we performed repetitive echocardiographic examinations of 166 patients with Braunwald class IB and IIB-IIIB UA for assessment of left ventricular (LV) structural-functional changes. Results. More severe form of remodeling (eccentric hypertrophy) was significantly more frequent in patients with IIB-IIB class UA. However in IB class UA during first year after episode of UA we noted rapid progression of remodeling mainly at the account of transition from concentric hypertrophy. Tissue Doppler study revealed more severe type of diastolic dysfunction (type 2 - pseudonormalization) in patients with class IIB-IIIB UA. Changes of some echocardiographic parameters correlated with severity of subsequent remodeling of the heart, development of chronic heart failure (CHF), myocardial infarction, and recurrent episodes of UA. In UA rate of unfavorable outcomes was related to degree of ischemic myocardial remodeling. We established a number of early EchoCG markers of LV remodeling increases of endsystolic dimension and volume, myocardial stress, lowering of ratios of diastolic peaks of filling and relaxation (E/A and E'/A') - preceding the development of systolic, diastolic dysfunction and CHF. Implication. The use of complex therapy with acetylsalicylic acid in patients with UA, perindopril, nebivolol and simvastatin is justified for prevention LV remodeling and lowering of rate of acute ischemia recurrence and CHF development.

Hakim-Adams syndrome is little known, although quite common disease. The etiology is not fully clear. Pathogenetic mechanisms included the blockage of cerebrospinal fluid outflow along the upper lateral surface of the brain, development of hydrocephalus with the expansion of the brain ventricles while maintaining normotensive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Main manifestations are ataxia, apraxia, symptoms of dementia and urinary disturbances, up to incontinence. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, exploratory lumbar and neuroimaging. Main treatment is ventriculoperitoneal (stomach) shunt placement for fluid drainage. Timely surgical intervention gives good results and improves quality of life of patients. © 2015, Media Sphera. We have undertaken the analysis of medical records of the patients presenting with major otogenic intracranial complications (OICC) including purulent meningitis, brain or cerebellum abscess, and thrombosis of sigmoid sinus. The presence of isolated and combined variants of otogenic intracranial complications was documented in 112 (43%) and 148 (56.9%) patients, respectively. The development of OICC in 80% of the patients was associated with exacerbation of chronic suppurative otitis media; in the remaining 20% of the patients OICC were the consequences of acute suppurative otitis media. Thrombosis of sigmoid sinus as an independent otogenic intracranial complication was documented in 17.5% of the patients while 42.5% of the cases required the treatment by an interdisciplinary team of specialists with the participation of an otorhinolaryngologist, neurologist, intensive care and other professionals. Such approach partly accounts for the relatively low (10.6%) mortality rate among our patients with OICC.

The objective of the present study was to formulate the indications for the specific immunotherapy (SIT) of ENT diseases based on the results of the examination and treatment of 1058 patients presenting with allergic rhinitis with special reference to the advantages of this approach over pharmacotherapy. Much attention is given to the adverse reactions associated with the application of immunotherapy and the methods for their correction. Personal opinions of the authors with regard to selected aspects of the use of specific immunotherapy in the otorhionolaryngological practice are presented.

The authors present the currently available data on mucoviscidosis (cystic fibrosis) based on their original experience and the review of the relevant literature. Special attention is given to the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the development of this condition, its diagnostics, and methods of treatment as exemplified by the clinical case of cystic fibrosis in an adult patient.

The data on the incidence, localization, and histological structure of paranasal sinus osteoma (PSO) are reported along with the authors experience in the diagnostics and surgical treatment of 42 patients presenting with this condition. The classification of the remote tumours based on their histopathological characteristics is considered. It is shown that 34 (80.9%) patients have osteomas of the compact type, 4 (9.5%) present with the tumours of the spongy type, and another 4 (9.5%) with the mixed type osteomas. It is maintained that the application of boron should be considered to facilitate the surgical removal of paranasal sinus osteomas.
