The research has been focusing on some connection between the chemical composition of the papers obtained by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the nature of the fillers, determined by energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy. The present paper corroborates the FTIR and EDXRF results obtained for some historical papers from books of the XIX-th and XX-th centuries, from private collections. These analytical results allowed a first approximation of technological paper composition and of the age determination of the samples. This analytical method can elaborate some properly methods for paper documents preservation, taking into account the aging and degradation processes of the historical paper.

The forensic examination and dating of documents is important in our society, because documents are used throughout our lives to record everything we do. The analysis of questioned documents therefore involves different types of analysis including comparison of the handwriting, ink, typescript or print, as well as physical and chemical characterization of the paper itself. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has already successfully been applied to applications in geology, forensics, ceramics, metals, glasses and a wide variety of environmental and industrial materials. In this study the use of elemental compositions, determined by ICP-MS to differentiate paper samples was investigated. Paper samples of commonly used office document paper from different sources were first microwave-digested in nitric acid-hydrogen peroxide solution and then trace elements concentrations were determined using ICP-MS.

Milk is a fluid containing several substances, and its composition depends on several factors. Vibrational spectroscopy is a powerful tool to determine the constituent concentrations and qualitative characteristics of dairy products. Vibrational spectrometry covers a series of well-established analytical methodologies suitable to be employed for both qualitative and quantitative purposes. In the first part of this review, theoretical aspects on vibrational techniques are presented; in the second part, the most important papers, published during the period 2009-2015, related to milk analysis are discussed. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Vibrational spectroscopy includes several techniques, the most important being mid-infrared (MIR), near-IR (NIR) and Raman spectroscopies. Vibrational spectrometry covers a series of well-established analytical methodologies suitable for both qualitative and quantitative purposes. Raman and MIR spectroscopies are complementary techniques and usually both are required to measure the vibrational modes of a molecule completely. In the first part of this review, we focus on theoretical aspects related to vibrational techniques, while, in the second part, we discuss important articles published during the period 2000-14 relating to polymorphic analysis. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

This review provides some background to infrared spectroscopy including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It is not meant to be complete or exhaustive but to provide the reader with sufficient background for selected applications in pharmaceutical analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a fast and nondestructive analytical method. Associated with chemometrics, it can become a powerful tool for the pharmaceutical industry. Indeed, it is suitable for analysis of solid, liquid, and biotechnological pharmaceutical forms. This review focuses on pharmaceutical FTIR applications used for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Moreover, it can be implemented during pharmaceutical development, in production for process monitoring, and in quality control laboratories. Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

The technique of liquid membranes is frequently used for the transport of various drugs due to several advantages. In the present paper the transport of acetaminophen through bulk liquid membrane using as carrier tributyl phosphate was realized. The influence of the source phase concentration upon the transport efficiency is studied. A diffusive mathematical model was proposed and the extraction constant and diffusion coefficient of the formed complex were calculated.

The paper presents experimental data obtained in the study of liquid-liquid partition equilibriums in biphasic system in order to optimize the process of transport through bulk liquid membranes (triphasic partition systems). The partition equilibriums of some nitrophenols using chloroform as extraction solvent and membranary solvent, respectively, were studied. The influence of the pH on the partition equilibriums was investigated. The repartition constants and the pKa values of the studied nitrophenols were calculated. Nitrophenols were transferred in triphasic system from a feed phase with pH 2, through a chloroform liquid membrane, into a receiving phase with pH 12, with efficiencies over 90%. © 2010.

A spectrophotometric method for the indirect determination of captopril (CP) in pharmaceutical formulations is proposed. The proposed procedure is based on the oxidation of captopril by potassium dichromate and the determination excess oxidant on the basis of its reaction with diphenylcarbazide (DPC). Under the optimum conditions, a good linear relationship (r = 0.9997) was obtained in the range of 0.08-3.5 μg mL-1. The assay limits of detection and quantitation were 0.024 and 0.08 μg mL-1, respectively. The results obtained for captopril determination in pharmaceuticals using the proposed method and those obtained with the US Pharmacopoeia method were in good agreement at the 95% confidence level.

Analytical results represent a very important part in a quality control program. Uncertainty estimation is an important step in method validation. The objective of this paper is to study the uncertainty of measurement estimation in the quantitative determination of codeine phosphate from pharmaceutical formulations using UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The uncertainty estimation was performed using the Ishikawa diagram. The estimation of uncertainty components proved to be a good way for the experimental model to obtain low contribution of uncertainty to the analytical result. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
