Epoxy adhesives are used in a wide range of applications because of their excellent bonding strength, versatility and excellent adhesion properties to various substrates. Another feature of epoxy adhesives is their high chemical and heat resistance. These unique properties open up the possibility of substituting traditional welding with structural epoxy adhesives in applications such as automotive molding, construction and electronics. The soft, flexible segments absorb energy from impact and can stop the growth of cracks in the matrix. There are several shortcomings in the use of conventional toughening agents such as their uneven distribution in the formulated material, risk of migration for non-reactive agents and the high viscosity of reactive modifiers. Adhesion improves after ageing under humid conditions. Epoxy formulations toughened with the new impact modifiers are very stable to thermal and hydrolytic ageing.
