The present invention relates to the use of one or more free radical scavengers as prophylactically or therapeutically effective substances and microparticles having an average particle size ranging from 5 to 200 m for the preparation of a topical pharmaceutical composition for the protection or treatment of skin or hair damages caused by chemotherapeutic treatment. The invention also concerns a method for the protection or treatment of skin and hair damages of a mammal caused by chemotherapy. The invention further relates to a kit for the protection or treatment of hair damages caused by chemotherapeutic treatment consisting of a topical composition comprising microparticles together with free radical scavengers and a shampoo for an effective hair cleaning and supporting the hair treatment. A kit for the protection or treatment of skin damages caused by chemotherapy consisting of a topical composition comprising microparticles together with free radical scavengers and a cleansing milk for an effective skin cleaning and supporting the skin treatment is a further object of the present invention.

This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is focused on the investigation of amino acids in the atmosphere and their contribution to the nitrogen content of atmospheric particles. It will establish an instrumental method for characterizing amino acids in gas and particle phases. Samples from several recent field campaigns will be analyzed for amino acid content. This project will improve the understanding of how biological activities, both natural and anthropogenic, that lead to the emission of amino acids influence Earths nitrogen cycle.

The specific objectives of the proposed project are to: (1) Calibrate the Semi-Volatile Thermal desorption Aerosol Gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (SV-TAG) for targeted amino acids by using chemical standards, and compare it to a gas phase instrument, Cluster Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (Cluster CIMS), and a particle phase instrument, two-dimensional GC with electron impact or vacuum UV ionization coupled to a high resolution time-of-flight MS (GCxGC-EI/VUV-HR-TOFMS); (2) Identify and quantify amino acids from SV-TAG data and filter samples collected during previous field campaigns in the Amazon Rainforest, Southeastern United States, and an indoor classroom; and (3) Determine the partitioning coefficients of targeted free amino acids in atmospheric aerosols from various environments. Large discrepancies between predicted and measured partitioning coefficients indicate that free amino acids are condensing and reacting in the particles. This supports the hypothesis that amino acids react in the particle phase to form stable, low volatility compounds that contribute to the observed excess nitrogen (i.e., difference between total nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen amounts) in atmospheric particles and fog/cloud droplets.

The present invention relates to a film forming complex and a cosmetic composition comprising this complex, both with excellent peel-off properties. The film forming complex comprises two natural film formers which are Hydrolyzed Corn Starch (trade name Asensa NFF11 E) and Pullulan (trade name Pullulan). Both, the complex of the invention and the cosmetic composition comprising the complex do not contain polyvinyl alcohol, alginates, alginic acid, polyurethane and ethanol. If the film forming complex or the cosmetic composition of the invention is applied to the skin a thin film mask with excellent coverage is formed within a drying time of less than 10 to 15 minutes. Following treatment, the mask will peel off easily in a single piece without pain. It does not cause redness and leaves a comfortable, smooth and pleasant feel on the skin.
