The stem cells transplantation from placental blood: The media promotion and education [La cultura del trapianto di cellule staminali ematopoietiche da sangue placentare attraverso i mezzi di informazione]

Aim: The most important thing in umbilical cord / placental blood donation is the recruitment of donors. Our aim is to detect which communications media most frequently reach parents, before and during the pregnancy; to focus on deficiencies in these media; and propose new solutions. Methods: The best time for counselling aboutplacental blood donation, was considered to be around 35-36 weeks of gestational age. Parents were asked to answer a list of questions in a questionnaire, in order to detect the main communications media from which parents obtained information on umbilical cord/placental blood donation, before and during the pregnancy. Results: The main information media were: other patient - 52%, mass media (TV, newspapers, magazines) - 30%, obstetrician - 10%, midwife - 7%, general practitioner - 1%. Among the mass media, TV was the main source of information in 20% of the cases, newspapers 33% and magazines 47% of the cases. Conclusions: The main information medium was the "pass- theword" from a pregnant woman to another. The so-called "tam-tam" is considered to be an occasional information mean, but the most remarkable in spreading, through a wide audience, information on placental blood stem cells donation.
