Some of the significant developments in the use of heterogeneous catalysts for Friedel-Crafts acylation of aromatic compounds are discussed. The Friedel-Crafts acylations of simple arenes, condensed arenes, and biphenyls have been analyzed. These aromatic substrates are examined together as their reactions with acylating reagents follow the same direct mechanism without involving secondary transformations, such as transposition and deacylation-reacylation processes. It has been stated that zeolites are well-known microcrystalline porous materials largely studied and applied in the petrochemical industry and they have been utilized in the fine chemicals industry. The acylation of naphthalene with benzoyl chloride and acetic anhydride has also been studied in the presence of different zeolites, including HBEA in comparison with AlCl3. Source
