For the thin-wall ductile iron casting with average impact toughness ≥17 J, and each casting must with a variety whole nondestructive testing, through numerical simulation, material control and casting process design, the qualified castings were developed. The results show that the key to obtain thin-wall ductile iron casting with high tenacity whole nondestructive testing is to ensure the casting internal material density, stable iron liquid filling, and good quality of molten iron metallurgy. Specific includes: at each stage of casting solidification isolation liquid zones must be in a sequential solidification principle of partition and the filling velocity of molten irons ≤80 mm/s, prevent continued turbulence, melting using pure raw materials strictly controlling iron liquid ingredients, strengthen the spheroidizing, inoculation, pouring process control. ©, 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. The magnetic marks defect was found on the surface of low temperature ductile iron castings during production. The simulation and improving process for ductile iron castings were put forward. The results show that under the premise of guarantee the purity of molten irons, the effective ways to eliminate magnetic marks defect of low temperature ductile iron include, optimization of melt iron filling mould flow field and the filling mould pressure distribution, reducing the negative pressure zone, preventing iron liquid filling mould process from continuous negative pressure, making sure the melt iron filling mould stable.

Exhaust slices were placed on the surface of the ductile iron thick parts, which were used to eliminate shrinkage defects of the castings, and the process principle was discussed. The results show that the solidification of the exhaust slices can form liquid static pressure for the castings, and then play feeding role. When a hard shell is formed on the casting surface, the exhaust slices solidify completely also. The hard shell can resist the pressure of graphite eutectic expansion forming effectively, and then the shrinkage defects during solidification can be eliminated effectively. Exhaust slices process can not only eliminate the ductile iron internal shrinkage, but also improve the process yield, and the economic benefits have increased significantly. ©, 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.
