The Raman frequency shifts of the Bg (58 cm−1) and Ag (906 cm−1) in the PbWO4 were measured in the temperature range from 4 K to 500 K. We found that the frequency shift of Ag (906 cm−1) shows interesting characteristic of positive change with increasing temperature. The temperature dependence of the Raman shift of these modes was analyzed using both the first-principles calculations and lattice perturbative approach. We found that the quartic anharmonic term of the first-order perturbation, as well as the second order one, and thermal expansion contribute to the temperature dependence of the frequency shift of Ag (906 cm−1). © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

This study focuses on how organization-based self-esteem (OBSE) moderates the relationship between employees' social network and knowledge-sharing behavior. Data were gathered by using questionnaire answers from employees working in various business organizations. High OBSE samples and low OBSE samples were selected, and the relationship between employees' social network in the work place and their knowledge-sharing behavior was analyzed. The results show that 1) a network with peers has a positive effect on knowledge-sharing behavior among low OBSE employees, and that 2) a network with leaders has a negative effect on knowledge sharing among low OBSE employees.

Strain rate and strain magnitude are important factors when considering osteogenic response to the bone strain imposed by mechanical stress. Jumping is a high-impact exercise that includes these factors. Ten to twenty jumping repetitions per day can increase bone mass and strength. However, the returns diminish with more than ten jumping repetitions because mechanosensitivity declines. Jumping exercise increases bone strength and bone diameters in particular. Although jump training is not suitable for older people, jump training could be an effective tool to prevent osteopenia in younger age groups.

In daily life, huge costs can arise from just one incorrect performance on a visual search task (e.g., a fatal accident due to a driver overlooking a pedestrian). One potential way to prevent such drastic accidents would be for people to modify their decision criterion (e.g., placing a greater priority on accuracy rather than speed) during a visual search. The aim of the present study was to manipulate the criterion by creating an awareness of being watched by another person. During a visual search task, study participants were watched (or not watched) via video cameras and monitors. The results showed that, when they believed they were being watched by another person, they searched more slowly and accurately, as measured by reaction times and hit/miss rates. These findings also were obtained when participants were videotaped and they believed their recorded behavior would be watched by another person in the future. The study primarily demonstrated the role of being watched by another on the modulation of the decision criterion for responding during visual searches. © 2013 Yuki Miyazaki.

Bowing is a greeting behavior. The present study examined the modulation effect of bowing on perception of attractiveness. In each trial, a portrait digitized from university yearbooks was presented on a computer screen. The portrait was mildly tilted toward participants to simulate a greeting bow (25-degree angle). Participants evaluated the subjective attractiveness of the face using a visual analog scale (0-100). The mean attractiveness judgment of the bowing portrait was significantly higher relative to that of the bending-backward or standing-still control conditions (Experiment 1). Additional control experiments revealed that alternative accounts relying on apparent spatial proximity and physical characteristics could not solely explain the effect of bowing (Experiment 2) and indicated that the effect was specific to objects perceived as faces (Experiment 3). Furthermore, observers’ in-return bowing behavior did not reduce the bowing effect (Experiment 4), and bowing motion increased the ratings of subjective politeness and submissiveness (Experiment 5). Finally, tilting the 3D faces elicited the same effect from observers as did tilting the still photos (Experiment 6). These results suggest that a tilting motion of portraits (or images of face-like objects) mimicking bowing enhances perceived attractiveness, at least as measured in a culture familiar with greeting by bowing. © 2015, The Psychonomic Society, Inc.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the temporal course of stiffness in the muscle-tendon unit after stretching. In 11 male participants, displacement of the myotendinous junction on the gastrocnemius medialis muscle was measured ultrasonographically during the passive-dorsiflexion test, with the ankle was passively dorsiflexed at 1°/s to the end of the range of motion. Passive torque, representing resistance to stretch, was also measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. On 4 different days, passive-dorsiflexion tests were performed before and immediately, 5, 10 or 15 min after stretching, which comprised dorsiflexion to end range of motion and holding that position for 1 min, 5 times. As a result, end range of motion and passive torque at end range of motion were significantly increased after stretching (P<0.05) as compared with each previous value. Although stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit was significantly decreased immediately and 5 min after stretching (P<0.05), this change recovered within 10 min. These results suggest that static stretching for 5 min results in significantly increased range of motion over 30 min, but significant decreases in stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit returned to baseline levels within 5-10 min. © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart, New York.

This article comprehensively examines the impact of recent smoking control policies in Japan, increases in cigarette taxes and the enforcement of the Health Promotion Law, on individual smoking choice by using multi-year and nationwide individual survey data to overcome the analytical problems of previous Japanese studies. In the econometric analyses, I specify a simple binary choice model based on a random utility model to examine the effects of smoking control policies on individual smoking choice by employing the instrumental variable probit model to control for the endogeneity of cigarette prices. The empirical results show that an increase in cigarette prices statistically significantly reduces the smoking probability of males by 1.0 percent and that of females by 1.4 to 2.0 percent. The enforcement of the Health Promotion Law has a statistically significant effect on reducing the smoking probability of males by 15.2 percent and of females by 11.9 percent. Furthermore, an increase in cigarette prices has a statistically significant negative effect on the smoking probability of office workers, non-workers, male manual workers, and female unemployed people, and the enforcement of the Health Promotion Law has a statistically significant effect on decreasing the smoking probabilities of office workers, female manual workers, and male non-workers. © 2013 Yuda; licensee Springer.

As a result, end ROM was significantly increased at 0, 15 and 30min (P<0.05 each) after stretching as compared with each previous value. Passive torque at end ROM was also significantly increased after stretching. Although the stiffness of the muscle-tendon unit was significantly decreased immediately after stretching (P<0.05), this shift recovered within 15min. These results showed that the retention time of the effect of stretching on viscoelasticity of the muscle-tendon unit was shorter than the retention time of the effect of stretching on end ROM. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the time course of the stretching-induced decrease in maximal isometric plantar flexion torque. Nineteen women participated in 2 randomly ordered experimental trials: static 5-minute stretching or control with no stretching. The participants performed isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) of the right plantar flexor muscles, whereas electromyographic (EMG) amplitude (root mean square) was calculated for the medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles. Measurements were conducted preintervention; immediately after intervention; and 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes postintervention. The static 5-minute stretching trial consisted of dorsiflexion to the end range of motion and holding that position for 1 minute, 5 times, whereas the control trial consisted of 5 minutes of resting. As a result, the MVC torque was significantly decreased immediately after, and 5 minutes after the static 5-minute stretching intervention compared with the preintervention value (p < 0.05), and this change recovered within 10 minutes. However, the EMG amplitude did not change from preintervention to postintervention under any conditions. These results suggest that the deficits of static stretching are disabled in a short time after static stretching. © 2013 National Strength and Conditioning Association.

The Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian for many-electronic positron- and positronium-atom complexes is considered and is applied to the neutral positronium-atom complexes PsB-PsF, PsAl-PsCl, PsGa-PsBr, and PsIn-PsI. For these complexes, energy differences between the high- and low-spin states which arise from different positronic spin coupling schemes are estimated, and relativistic corrections for the dissociation energies into a positronium and a neutral atom. The relativistic effects are obtained from first-order perturbation theory based on the Hartree-Fock description. The influence of correlation effects on the dissociation energies for positronium halides are also discussed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
