With high occurrence of sudden water pollution incident, China faces an increasingly severe situation of water environment. In order to deter the acts of environmental pollution, ensure the damaged resources of environment can be restored and compensated, it is very critical to quantify the economic losses caused by the sudden water pollution incident. This paper took truck rollover pollution incidents in Chongqing for an example, established a set of evaluation method for quantifying the environmental damage, and then assessed the environmental damage by the method from four aspects, including the property damage, ecological environment and resources damages, the costs of administrative affairs in emergency disposal, and the costs of investigation and evaluation. ©, 2015, Science Press. The utility of an OilTech121 portable oil content analyzer was assessed during a sudden water pollution incident in the Yangtze River basin. Specifically, variations in oil concentrations along the receiving stream were quantified and impacts on water quality were evaluated. Results showed that the stream was obviously polluted by oil, and oil concentrations in the subcatchment d2 of the stream reached up to 24.9 mg/L. Intercept devices consisting of oil boom and suction felts were deployed, and this equipment had obvious dissipation effects on the oil. In four interception zones, the oil interception efficiencies were estimated to be 41%, 34%, 28%, and 41%. In addition, while water quality was affected in the spill area and nearby waterways, the water at the downstream water intake was not contaminated. Hence, there was no need to interrupt water intake operations. With advantages including ease of transport, simple operations, fast testing capabilities, and the ability to collect a wealth of timely data for assessing the adsorption efficiency of intercept equipment, risks to water intakes, and other important decision areas, the portable oil content analyzer was found to be very useful for deployment in oil-related water pollution incidents. © 2016, Science Press. Take water reducing agent spill as example, we calculated the virtual disposal cost of spilled wastewater from small experiment, electricity, labor, equipment rental, agents, venue rental and sludge disposal by the method of simulation disposal. Then, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the changes of mixed wastewater acute toxicity before and after simulation disposal, which confirmed the effectiveness of simulation disposal method. Considering function area sensitivity and specific situation of the incident, we used the virtual disposal cost of spilled wastewater multiplied by corresponding coefficient to calculate the quantitative amount of eco-environmental damage. ©, 2015, Science Press. With the recent development of Chinese economy, sudden water pollution incidents frequently occur in tributaries, resulting a detrimental threat to humans and ecological environment. When sudden incidents of water pollution happen, we should not only take effective emergency measures, but also carry out environmental damage assessment to investigate pollution responsibility, for reducing the pollution and guaranteeing that the damaged environment resources get recovery and compensation. According to characteristics of tributaries and cases of environmental emergency response processes in various provinces, we established a set of emergency procedures to response sudden accidents of tributaries pollution. Also we reviewed the necessity, methods, and technology route of environmental damage assessment, and then built the causation chain, including confirming damaged environmental resources, identifying the contaminants and their sources, and establishing exposure pathway in the process of environmental damage, which has great meaning for the environmental damage assessment in sudden tributaries pollution incidents.
