Natural rubber/nanosilica (NR/SiO2) composite was developed with latex compounding techniques. SiO2 was firstly modified by KH570, and then grafted with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) through polymerization in order to obtain SiO2-PMMA nanoparticles. Finally, NR/SiO2 nanocomposites were formed, blending SiO2-PMMA with NR-PMMA. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical characterization results showed that PMMA has been successfully introduced onto the surface of SiO2. SiO2-PMMA nanoparticles are homogenously distributed throughout NR matrix, with the average particle range from 60 nm to 80 nm. The tensile strength of NR/SiO2 composite, compared to the pure NR, is enhanced by 35%.
