With rapid urbanization and community demand for ecological civilizations, it is inevitable to consider flood risk, ecology and landscape together in the management of urban rivers. This paper first summarizes the main problems facing urban rivers in China. Ecological concepts, technologies and methodologies those are required for ecological civilization implementation are discussed. Secondly, the Nanchuan River project in Xining city is used as a case study. In recent years, the Nanchuan River has had flooding and several other problems including ecosystem fragmentation, surface erosion, water pollution and low landscaping. Four major engineering solutions were proposed, which are river flood risk control engineering, sewerage pipe engineering, wetland engineering and landscape engineering. All these concepts have been considered in an integrated way to satisfy the requirements of the urban river safety and ecological health, which can ensure the harmonious development between humans and nature. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
