To solve the problems of interrupted oil supply in pipeline, filter pad jam and atomizer leakage, the aluminum foil lubricating device in YB47 packer was improved as following: 1) replacing original nozzle by an pneumatic adjustable atomizing nozzle; 2) removing oil atomizer and designing a new lubricant container with a designed volume of 2000 mL, enough to support the equipment running for 200 hours. The major design parameters for the lubricating device determined via experiments were air pressure 150 kPa; foil lubricating functioning while machine running in a speed range of 200-550 packet/min; nozzle: spraying duration 30 sec at 35 sec interval; the installation height of nozzle 20 mm above aluminum foil conveying platform. The results showed that the improved system was simple in structure and ran stably, the amount and width of sprayed lubricant were controlled within 10±0.8 mL/hour and 20±1.5 mm, respectively. In order to produce more qualified cigars from MIR-01 cigar making machine combination, a reverse order adjustment method was proposed by combining with some adjusting procedures in the proper order adjustment method, corresponding adjustment procedure and the technical requirements of eight key links were determined. A model of the machine adjustment method was developed, and its effectiveness was verified by simulation tests. The results showed that the success rate of adjustment reached 100%; comparing with the proper order adjustment method, adjustment time was saved by 6 min, the rate of qualified cigars increased by 1.5 percentage points, the consumption of filler, binder and wrapper per 10 000 cigars reduced by 0.4 kgs, 52 pieces and 24 pieces, respectively. Simulation model described the actual production situation with the accuracy of 80%, simulation values and actual values presented the same trend. New strategy of using ferric zeolite ZSM-5 and Y to adsorb and catalytically degrade tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) is reported in this article. These zeolites were modified by both aqueous ion-exchange with FeSO4 solution and wet-impregnation of Fe(NO3)3, and characterized by XRD, UV-vis DRS, H2-TPR and temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR). Apart from laboratory tests, these samples were put into tobacco rods of cigarette to assess their real performance of reducing TSNA content in smoke, and the determination of TSNA was carried out by LC-MS/MS technique with the assistance of internal-standards. The ion-exchanged zeolites are more active than their impregnated analogs, and the ferric Y zeolite could selectively reduce 26% of total TSNA in mainstream smoke of Burley type tobacco. Catalytic breaking of the chemical bond in NNO group of nitrosamines by zeolite is the key step of decomposition of these carcinogens. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

In order to save capital investment in construction of warehouse for tobacco aging and rationalize the arrangement of auxiliary facilities, the purification system for exhaust gas after phosphine fumigation and air conditioning system were optimized with HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) technology. The ventilation pipe was designed in accordance with centralized double duct air conditioning system, comprising of phosphine purification equipment and modular air conditioning units, and PLC was adopted to automatically adjust the temperature and humidity in the warehouse and monitor the phosphine concentration in exhausted air during fumigation. The results of practical application showed that optimal design shortened the duration of phosphine purification and realized the zero emission of harmful gas. Tobacco leaf aging could be conducted at different layers or areas in warehouse, and the emission of phosphine gas after fumigation was safe and reached the standard. The air conditioners were installed in a separate room, and the warehouse space was increased relatively, which saved 5310 thousand RMB yuan per warehouse building. The operation of air conditioning units could be controlled according to the amount of aged leaves, which reduced the consumption of electric power and the cost of leaf aging.

Unsatisfied with the loosening effect of traditional feeder, therefore a reconstituted tobacco feeder with automatic loosening function was designed, which was composed of a feeding belt, an automatic loosening device, a hopper and an elevating belt. Reconstituted tobacco was conveyed to the automatic loosening device via the feeding belt, the loosened tobacco entered hoper and was uniformly blended by elevating belt, which could be adjusted according to the flow of tobacco. The results of application showed that there was no obvious tobacco breakage, the loosen rate reached 99.7%, and the loosening effect of reconstituted tobacco and the blending of tobacco were improved.

In YB47 packer, the break in conveying belt joint tends to damage cigarette packets due to jam in the discharge passage, therefore the passage was modified by analyzing the movement relationship between cigarette packet and conveying belt. The motor, conveying belt, pulleys were removed. The bottom belt was replaced by a steel guide plate with grain-shaped surface to reduce the frictional force between cigarette packets and the plate, ensure the speed of cigarette packet for entering pneumatic lifter and avoid the damage of cigarette packet. The results of application showed that the machine failures caused by belt joint break were avoided, the quality of cigarette packets was guaranteed, the working life of the guide plate reached 24 months, 6 conveying belts were saved for a packer per year, the running cost of machine was reduced, and the machine efficiency was increased.

The design and preparation of a new "self-protected" zeolite catalyst are reported in this paper for the first time, in order to face the challenges arising from environmental protection, in selective catalytic degrading of tobacco specific nitrosamine (TSNA) carcinogens in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). A new method to synthesize NaY zeolite with uniform microsphere morphology via an organic amine TMAOH as bifunctional template is reported in this study. The spherical zeolite is prepared by a one-step hydrothermal crystallization without any post-treatment or other shape-directing agent. It has a rugged surface like a cluster of crystal grains and its crystallization process is monitored in detail by means of XRD and SEM. To assess how the zeolite morphology affects its catalytic performance in complex systems, this material was directly mixed with tobacco shred and added into cigarettes to in situ degrade TSNA in smoke. As a result, the clustered zeolite microsphere can avoid the interference of particulate matter in smoke and shows a high selectivity in the removal of TSNA. This synthetic method offers a novel way of preparing zeolites with a spherical morphology, which has great potential application in the fields of catalysis, adsorption and separation. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
