To assess the capability of cigarette's physical index testing system accurately and systematically and make up the deficiency of traditional univariate measurement system, the physical index testing system was regarded as a multivariate one and assessed by a method which combined a two-phase method with a modified-region-based method. In the first phase of the two-phase method, the variation of measurement system was estimated with calibrated test rods; in the second phase, the total variation of measurement system was estimated through the historical measurement data of the same measurement equipment. The capability of the measurement system was assessed comprehensively by the modified-region-based method. Two important assessment indices, percentages of repeatability and reproducibility(%R&R)and ratio of precision to tolerance (%P/T), and their meaning were given. Also given were the formulas for calculating percentage of equipment variation(%EV)and percentage of appraiser variation(%AV)for equipment setting. The results showed that: 1)The created indexes %R&R and %P/T were 16.49% and 12.92% for the testing system, respectively; all in the range of 10%-30%, which indicated that the system had enough measurement capability and higher measurement precision. 2) Multivariate measurement system analysis method took the correlation between cigarette's physical indices into account, featured high accuracy and integrity, and was suitable for analyzing the capability of cigarette testing stations of different types. Based upon an existing building and heating system with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), an integrated model is developed for simulating the thermal and hydraulic behavior of the heating system under various operation cases. According to the simulation results, the effectiveness of TRVs in reducing overheating has been studied. The results indicate that when the set value of the TRV is kept at 2-3, its effectiveness in reducing the overheating phenomena caused by an excessive water flow rate is less than 60%. If the overheating phenomena is caused by an excessive supply water temperature and radiator area, the effectiveness of the TRV can reach about 80%; the TRV's effect becomes more obvious with increasing overheating degree; however, about 20%-40% of overheating loss still needs to be resolved by improving improper operation adjustment and design. Considering these results, a control strategy is proposed, in which the supply water temperature is adjusted daily according to the flow performance of the system, and the pump is operated with frequency conversion and constant pressure difference. Further simulation indicates that, under the new control strategy, the variation of the heat supply quantity of the system can match the heat load change, and the flow rate of the system can be controlled at an appropriate range. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. In order to accurately determine the major phenolic compounds (hydroquinol, resorcinol, catechol, phenol, p-cresol, m-cresol, o-cresol) retained by cigarette filters, a rapid and accurate high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed by investigating sample pretreatment conditions, such as filter-slitting means, extraction solvent, extraction method, and extraction time. A comparative experiment on seven filter cigarette samples was performed with the developed method among six laboratories. The results showed that: 1) By slitting the filter longitudinally from the tobacco end to the mouth end, then subjecting it to ultrasonic extraction with 50 mL solution (1% acetic acid, 79% methanol and 20% water, V/V) for 30 minutes at room temperature, the said phenolic compounds retained in the filter could be completely extracted. 2) Within the concentration of 0.04-4.00 μg/mL, the said phenolic compounds exhibited good linear relations with R2 > 0.999, the recoveries ranged from 93.35% to 104.50% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 7.3%. 3) The RSD of the six laboratories in resorcinol and phenol determination was less than 15%, in the other five phenolic compounds determination was less than 10%.
