Analysis of nutrient balance of tobacco field in Enshi was carried out. Result showed that: nitrogen was basically in equilibrium, while phosphorus and potassium were more than needed. Fertilization of Enshi tobacco-growing field should follow a principle of increasing nitrogenous fertilizer, stabilizing phosphate and potash fertilizer. Increasing topdressing ratio and the times, and cropping economic plants was suggested to improve nutrient utilization and reduce residue. Reducing chemical fertilizer input moderately can prevent soil acidification. Increasing organic fertilizer, especially manure, and applying tobacco straw bioorganic manure and green manures were proposed to realize tobacco-ecological nutrient circulation.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is the most serious soilborne disease of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) in China. In this study, 89 strains were collected in 2012 to 2014 from across the four major tobacco-growing areas in China. The strains were identified as phylotype I by multiplex polymerase chain reaction and further divided into seven sequevars based on polymorphisms in the endoglucanase (egl) gene. Among the seven sequevars, four (15, 17, 34, and 44) have been previously described as pathogens of tobacco and two (13 and 14), which are reported here on tobacco, were previously found only on other plants. In addition, a new sequevar named 54 was identified. Strains from tobacco from different regions showed different levels of genetic diversity based on partial egl gene sequences. The farther north the distribution, the lower the gene diversity found. Pathogenicity of 27 representative strains was assessed by inoculation onto three tobacco cultivars of varying susceptibility. Through cluster analysis of area under the disease progress curve values, the 27 strains were classified into different pathotypes based on virulence; however, no obvious associations were found between sequevar and pathotype. These results will assist in determining geographical distribution of strains, and provide the foundation for breeding and integrated management programs in China. © 2016 The American Phytopathological Society.

In order to breed new flue-cured tobacco lines of harmonious chemical composition via scientific and rational parent selection and combination collocation, thirty complete diallel cross combinations were prepared from six flue-cured tobacco varieties with Griffing method (III). The genetic effects of eight chemical component indexes (the contents of nicotine, total nitrogen, total sugar, potassium, chlorine and the ratios of total nitrogen/nicotine, total sugar/ nicotine, potassium/chlorine) in tobacco leaves were preliminarily analyzed. The results showed that the said chemical indexes differed extremely significantly between combinations, the general combining ability (GCA) between parents and the specific combining ability (SCA) between combinations exhibited extremely significantly differences as well. Moreover, the variance of GCA was greater than that of SCA for all the indexes except for the ratio of total nitrogen/ nicotine. It indicated that for most of the chemical indexes investigated in this experiment, parent selection was more important than combination collocation. For GCA effect, cv. RG17 possessed a potential in increasing potassium content and cv. Nanjiang No.3 might increase potassium/chlorine ratio; 6388 lines presented a potential in decreasing chlorine content. Analyzing SCA effect from the point of chemical quality, the combination of K326 ×Nanjiang No.3, Jingyehuang × Nanjiang No.3 and K8 × Jingyehuang were the best, followed by K326 × Jingyehuang and K8×RG17. There existed obvious heritability differences between the traits of chemical indexes. Potassium content and total sugar content possessed the highest and the lowest special heritability of 33.82% and 1.37%, respectively. The general heritability of chlorine content (51.84% ) and potassium content (50.04%) was the highest, while that of total sugar content (15.08%) was the lowest. Only the special heritability of potassium content accounted for over 50% of general heritability, it indicated that the heritability of potassium content mainly was additive effect, which facilitated to the breeding tobacco cultivars of high-potassium content and was suitable to line selection at earlier generation. For the traits of other chemical indexes, it would be preferable to carry out line selection while the trait became stable. ©, 2015, Editorial Office of Tobacco Science and Technology. In order to investigate the aroma characteristics of flue-cured tobacco leaves of different flavor styles, the aroma characters and intensity of flue-cured tobacco leaf samples of robust, fresh and medium flavor styles collected from typical ecological zones at home and abroad were evaluated and analyzed. The results showed that on the basis of natural tobacco aroma (hay-like scent), burnt-sweetness, woody, burnt and spicy scents were the main aroma characteristics of robust flavor style flue-cured tobacco, particularly burnt-sweetness; on the basis of natural tobacco aroma (hay-like scent), fresh-sweetness, green, woody and spicy scents were the main aroma characteristics of fresh flavor style flue-cured tobacco, particularly fresh-sweetness; on the basis of natural tobacco aroma (hay-like scent), pure-sweetness, woody and spicy scents were the main aroma characteristics of medium flavor style flue-cured tobacco, particularly pure-sweetness.
