A headspace-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) method was developed to simultaneously determine 20 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in tipping paper. The optimum detection parameters were: needle temperature of 160°C, transfer temperature of 180°C, split ratio of 5:1. The recovery rate was between 90.17% and 102.13%, while RSD was less than 2.00%. The MS-Scan qualitative and quantitative detection limits were from 0.0065 to 0.1331 mg/m2 and from 0.0218 to 0.4436 mg/m2, respectively. The SIR qualitative and quantitative detection limits were from 0.0001 to 0.0115 mg/m2 and from 0.0003 to 0.0384 mg/m2, respectively.

A sensitive ion exchange chromatography method was developed for simultaneous determination of nitrate and nitrite in tobacco. Ultrapure water was used for ultrasound-assisted solvent condition. Extract liquor were separated using anion exchange column. Nitrate and nitrite ion were then detected by conductance detector. Results showed that linear relations were observed in the range of 0.032~1.600 mg/L for nitrite, and 0.800~40.000 mg/L for nitrate. Detection limits were 1.06 mg/kg for nitrate and 1.23 mg/kg for nitrite. Recoveries were 96.3%~99.0% for nitrate and 96.1%~101.6% for nitrite. Both RSDs were below 5%.

The isotopic ratios of lead vary with geographic locations. In this study, lead isotopic ratios of soil from different regions in Fujian Province are determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, the differences of lead isotopic ratios (206Pb/207Pb, 206Pb/ 208Pb) in the total digests of soil fractions and in that of the residual fractions were compared. The results show that lead isotopic ratios of residual fraction are more efficient than that of total digests of soil fractions in identifying sources of soil.

The non-wood fiber materials will still play a very important role in the foreseeable future in the pulp and paper industry of China. Non-wood fibers are widely used in tobacco industry as raw materials of cigarette auxiliary parts, such as cigarette paper, plug wrapper, filter tow, inner backing paper and packet. This paper provides a summary of currently available knowledge in the area of pulping and paper making with non-wood fiber materials. This paper also discusses the potential application of non-wood fibers in tobacco industry, especially bast-fibers, and also discusses the problems in its commercialization.

Various ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) have been prepared by evaporation-induced triconstituent co-assembly method. Their mesostructural stability under different carbon content, aging time and acidity were conveniently monitored by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 sorption isotherms techniques. The results show mesostructural stability of OMCs is enhanced as the carbon content increases from 36% to 46%, further increasing carbon content deteriorates the mesostructural stability. Increasing aging time from 0.5 h to 5.0 h make the mesostructural stability go through an optimum (2.0 h) and gradually reduce framework shrinkage of the OMCs. Highly OMCs can only be obtained in the acidity range of 0.2-1.2 mol/L HCl, when the acidity is near the isoelectric point of silica, the resulting OMCs have the best mesostructure stability. Under the optimum condition, the carbon content of 46%, aging time of 2.0 h, and 0.2 mol/L HCl, the resulting OMCs have the best mesostructure stability and the highest BET surface areas of 2281 m2/g. © 2011 Chinese Physical Society.

Nanomaterial of ZnO/TiO 2 compound was synthesised, and its effect on the photocatalytic degradation of pesticide residues and hazardous chemicals in tobacco was discussed. The results showed that the average particle diameter of the nanomaterial was about 15 nm, the molar ratio of Zn and Ti was 1:1. With high absorption intensity and photocatalytic activity in the ultraviolet and visible region, subject nanomaterial has high activity in the photocatalytic degradation of organophosphorus pesticide residues and nitrite in tabacco. The longer the dispose time is, the higher the degradation rate will be.
