The potential application of flavor encapsulation comprising regenerated porous cellulose particles (RPC) as core and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as wall was investigated using l-menthol as a model flavor. RPC was prepared by sol-gel transition method and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micromeritics instruments. The results revealed that the RPC showed the particle size about 300-500 μm as well as the specific surface area about 8.7 m2/g. Based on high adsorptive capability, RPC could encapsulate menthol well and offer high encapsulation yield. The menthol content of RPC-menthol complexes (RPCM) was measured by gas chromatogram (GC) and showed the maximum content of about 12 % menthol with the encapsulation efficiency of 70 %. Besides, RPC provided comparable flavor retention as microcrystalline cellulose during storage under relative humidity of 80 % at 25 C. CMC was then used to modify RPCM and the construction of RPCM-CMC was confirmed by FTIR and SEM. The studies showed that CMC wall on RPCM surface had no influence on the menthol content and encapsulation efficiency in encapsulation process, but provided a significant increase in menthol retention during storage depending on the content of CMC in RPCM-CMC. Moreover, the stability test at various temperatures showed that both RPCM and RPCM-CMC were stable at room temperature and released flavor at temperatures common in food processing. In order to fast identify and discriminate the producing area of flue-cured tobacco leaves nondestructively, four discrimination models were established with PLS-DA algorithm on the basis of near-infrared spectra of 464 tobacco leaf samples from Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing and Fujian in 2008. The results showed that: 1) The correlation coefficient between predicted values and measured values of classified variables of calibration set were higher than 0.94 in all the four models, which showed that the models were of good fit. 2) The discriminating accuracies of models for samples in validation set were higher than 93.0%. 3) The leaves from Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing and Fujian could be effectively discriminated from each other by the models.

In order to find out the relationship between color attribute and pigment concentration of tobacco leaves, their variation and relationship during flue-curing were studied by taking tobacco leaves of different maturities of cv. Honghuadajinyuan as objects. The results showed that in the whole process of flue-curing, the R4B values of leaf was R (the brightness value of red in color digital image) > G (the brightness value of green in color digital image) > B (the brightness value of blue in color digital image). The samples of different maturities in the order of R, G and B mean values were overripe leaves > ripe leaves > unripe leaves. Chlorophyll degraded faster in leaves of lower maturities than in leaves of higher maturities. The content of carotenoid in unripe leaves decreased sharply at yellowing and color-fixing stages, and closed to that in ripe and overripe leaves at the end of color-fixing stage; however, less carotenoid was degraded in overripe leaves. The R value was extremely significantly negatively correlative to chlorophyll content, and B value significantly correlated to carotenoid content. The combination of R and G, r and g (hue component) had a good correlation with pigment concentration. There was a significantly positive relationship between H (tone) value and the contents of chlorophyll and carotenoid. Eight parameters significantly correlated to pigment concentration of tobacco leaf, including H, g, r-g, G-R, G/ R, G/(R + B), (G-R)/(G + R) and (R-G)/(R + G + B), were selected to establish the stepwise regression equations for pigment concentration, which reached a significant level by F-test. Therefore, the correlation between color attribute and pigment concentration of tobacco leaves of different maturities was significant during flue-curing, and it could be used as an auxiliary means to judge the pigment concentration of flue-cured tobacco leaves.

It usually takes long time for discharging head and tail tobacco from a silo, the control means for equalizing discharge flow of silo type tobacco feeder was designed with sectional control method. At the head tobacco discharge stage, the elevating belt ran intermittently controlled by PLC in order to maintain a thicker tobacco layer on the elevating belt and increase tobacco feeding capacity to the metering tube. At the silo emptying stage, the photoelectric tube in silo was relocated so that it could tell the tail tobacco ahead of time, then accelerated silo's bottom belt and reversed the rotation of the picker roller. The results of application showed that the improvement solved the problem of insufficient head tobacco discharge flow, and the downstream equipment was properly fed. The duration of tail tobacco reduced from almost 10 minutes to 1 minute, tobacco flow was stably controlled.

Biomass-based materials are attractive due to their renewability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Chitosan is a typical biomacromolecule that can be used as feedstock for novel materials. Here, the self-assembly of chitosan chains with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets has been studied, where GO works as the two-dimensional cross-linker dues to its multifunctional groups on both sides. Supramolecular hydrogels of chitosan and GO have been prepared by controlling the concentration of GO, ratio of chitosan to GO, and temperature. It was found that at high GO concentration, hydrogel can be obtained at room temperature, and the as-prepared hydrogel showed a self-healing performance. However, at low GO concentration, the supramolecular hydrogel formed only at high temperature (95 °C). The driving force for the hydrogel is believed to be the noncovalent interactions. The reversible hydrogels have potential applications in fields of biomaterials, wastewater treatment, and smart materials. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The effects of two pneumatic drying parameters (the moisture content in input tobacco and the rate of steam flow) on the deliveries of seven harmful components (crotonaldehyde, phenol, HCN, B[a]P, CO, NH3, and NNK) in mainstream cigarette smoke were investigated. The softwares DPS and MATLAB for the calculation of the parameters corresponding to the lowest deliveries of the seven components and the lowest value of hazard index of cigarette (H value), and the validation tests were carried out in real life production. The results showed that tobacco drying at the optimized parameters on the basis of B[a]P delivery (the moisture content in input tobacco 22% and the rate of steam flow 325 kg/hour) or H value (the moisture content in input tobacco 22% and the rate of steam flow 186 kg/hour), the deliveries of HCN, CO, NH3, and NNK in mainstream smoke and H value of cigarette samples decreased by more than 10%. ©, 2015, Editorial Office of Tobacco Science and Technology. A reliable and simple method for quantitative analysis of free and conjugated neutral aroma components (including aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, esters and alkenes) in tobacco using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS) is described. Simple solvent extraction using methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) ensured extraction of the neutral aroma components in their free form. The components present as conjugates were isolated using MTBE extraction following acid-catalysed hydrolysis. The GC × GC-TOFMS analysis was performed to comprehensively identify different forms of neutral aroma components in tobacco. Compared with the conventional methods, our method not only simplified the process but also saved time and solvent. It also exhibited higher selectivity and sensitivity and demonstrated the following results: the limit of detection of the neutral aroma components varied from 0.006 μg/g for 2-acetylfuran to 0.133 μg/g for 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfural, the relative standard deviations were from 0.5% to 6.8% and the recovery ranged from 82.4% to 118.2%. The optimized method was successfully employed to analyse real tobacco samples. Eighty-three neutral aroma components of interest were identified. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

A cigarette paper additive having harm reduction function and application thereof are provided. The additive contains alkali metal salts of butane tetracarboxylic acid or cyclobutane tetracarboxylic acid which are prepared by reacting the butane tetracarboxylic acid or cyclobutane tetracarboxylic acid with alkali. The application thereof is evenly adding the aqueous additive solution at different concentrations to cigarette paper by a metering rod-type film transfer sizing machine in a sizing section of the cigarette paper production, and the produced cigarette paper is used for cigarette production that can effectively reduce release of CO, phenol and tar in the mainstream smoke, and has better effects of harm reduction and tar reduction. The method of the invention is easy, does not need to alter the existing cigarette paper production process, and has low cost and higher industrial application value.
