In order to investigate the pyrolytic products of polysaccharide from Gracilaria lemaneiformis and the effects of its application on the deliveries of harmful components in mainstream cigarette smoke, the pyrolysis of polysaccharides was carried out under the conditions simulating cigarette smoking and the pyrolytic products were determined by GC/MS, meanwhile, the deliveries of seven harmful components, including CO, HCN, NNK, NH3, B[a]P, phenol and crotonaldehyde, in mainstream smoke of the cigarette containing the polysaccharides were analyzed. The results showed that within the selected temperature ranges of 300, 600 and 900°C, the kinds and total amount of pyrolytic products increased with the rise of pyrolysis temperature. The major pyrolytic products were furans, ketones and organic acids, and total amount of furans accounted for nearly 30%. The application of polysaccharides from Gracilaria lemaneiformis had no significant impact on the deliveries of harmful components in mainstream cigarette smoke. Source

It usually takes long time for discharging head and tail tobacco from a silo, the control means for equalizing discharge flow of silo type tobacco feeder was designed with sectional control method. At the head tobacco discharge stage, the elevating belt ran intermittently controlled by PLC in order to maintain a thicker tobacco layer on the elevating belt and increase tobacco feeding capacity to the metering tube. At the silo emptying stage, the photoelectric tube in silo was relocated so that it could tell the tail tobacco ahead of time, then accelerated silo's bottom belt and reversed the rotation of the picker roller. The results of application showed that the improvement solved the problem of insufficient head tobacco discharge flow, and the downstream equipment was properly fed. The duration of tail tobacco reduced from almost 10 minutes to 1 minute, tobacco flow was stably controlled. Source

Biomass-based materials are attractive due to their renewability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Chitosan is a typical biomacromolecule that can be used as feedstock for novel materials. Here, the self-assembly of chitosan chains with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets has been studied, where GO works as the two-dimensional cross-linker dues to its multifunctional groups on both sides. Supramolecular hydrogels of chitosan and GO have been prepared by controlling the concentration of GO, ratio of chitosan to GO, and temperature. It was found that at high GO concentration, hydrogel can be obtained at room temperature, and the as-prepared hydrogel showed a self-healing performance. However, at low GO concentration, the supramolecular hydrogel formed only at high temperature (95 °C). The driving force for the hydrogel is believed to be the noncovalent interactions. The reversible hydrogels have potential applications in fields of biomaterials, wastewater treatment, and smart materials. © 2013 American Chemical Society. Source

A cigarette paper additive having harm reduction function and application thereof are provided. The additive contains alkali metal salts of butane tetracarboxylic acid or cyclobutane tetracarboxylic acid which are prepared by reacting the butane tetracarboxylic acid or cyclobutane tetracarboxylic acid with alkali. The application thereof is evenly adding the aqueous additive solution at different concentrations to cigarette paper by a metering rod-type film transfer sizing machine in a sizing section of the cigarette paper production, and the produced cigarette paper is used for cigarette production that can effectively reduce release of CO, phenol and tar in the mainstream smoke, and has better effects of harm reduction and tar reduction. The method of the invention is easy, does not need to alter the existing cigarette paper production process, and has low cost and higher industrial application value.

In order to effectively discriminate tobacco leaf samples of different grades or from different areas, 24 leaf samples of C2F, B2F and X2F grades of different cultivars from Guangdong, Fujian, Chongqing and Sichuan were tested by electronic nose, and the test data were analyzed with constellation diagram clustering method. The results showed that the said method could effectively distinguish 16 tobacco leaf samples by their growing areas, the leaf samples in the order of their comprehensive values were Chongqing>Guangdong>Sichuan>Fujian. The 12 samples of cv. Honghuadajinyuan from Sichuan were effectively distinguished by their grades, the order of their comprehensive values were C2F>B2F>X2F.
