Thermal shrinkage behavior during heat setting and shrinkage mechanism of poly(phenylene sulphide)(PPS) fiber was studied by means of sonic velocity meter, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). It shows that PPS fiber is involved in a rapid shrinkage near the glass transition temperature (Tg), which contributes the most to the shrinkage; The shrinkage reaches its highest rate at Tg and basically completes before the cold crystallization temperature (Tc); The growth of crystal and the development of crystalline regions after Tc, to some extent, limit the further shrinking of the PPS fiber. Using domestic polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin as the raw material, PPS fiber was prepared by melting spinning process. The effect of draw ratio, draw temperature and heat setting temperature on the structure and properties of PPS fiber was studied. The results show that the failure stress and orientation degree increase when the draw ratio and heat setting temperature raise, the shrinkage rate increases with the draw ratio increasing. The failure stress and orientation degree increase to a maximum firstly and then decrease when the draw temperature is elevated, but the shrinkage rate drops as the draw temperature and heat setting temperature increase.
