To reasonably determine the final bridge type scheme for the main bridge of Maputo Bridge, Mozambique, the bridge type schemes of the cable-stayed bridge with a main span 440 m and the suspension bridge with a main span 680 m were respectively compared and studied carefully and thoroughly in regard of the actual situations of the bridge site and the construction conditions, with reference to the Eurocodes and the SATCC (Draft) Code and also in the light of several control factors, including the structural system selection, navigation adaptability, structural ship collision capacity, aviation limit height at the bridge site and construction methods. The results of the comparison and study demonstrate that the bridge type scheme of the suspension bridge with a main span 680 m that can span the Maputo Harbor area in one span will avoid the construction of the bridge under water at construction stage, has no risk of ship collision at operation stage, will minimize the impact on the navigation and therefore, the bridge type scheme should be the reasonable scheme to be selected for the bridge.
