Foreign materials have been used in construction of large storage tank for a very long time in China. At present, the quenched and tempered high strength steel plate for large tanks was domestically developed and applied in the construction of large tanks in China. The mechanical properties tests of horizontal automatic submerged arc welding (SAW) joints of large tank steel plates of 08MnNiVR and the structural properties and Charpy impact fracture appearance were analyzed. It can be concluded that the mechanical properties of the joints can meet the requirements of the related standards of large tank welding construction. The hardness of HAZ is 224 HV10. The structures and toughness of domestic 08MnNiVR steel can meet the needs of construction and can replace the imported storage tank steel to be used in the construction of large storage tank. With the worldwide pipeline construction boom, the pipeline welding technology has rapidly developed. Considering the needs of some projects, many tests of mechanical properties of X65 pipeline steel metal active-gas (MAG) welded joint have been carried out, and so do the analysis of metallographic structure characteristics and the impact fracture appearance of joint. The results show that, using MAG welding, the test data of mechanical properties of their girth welded joint are in conformity with the relevant technical standards (API1104). MAG welding with CO2 protection has the characteristics of low hydrogen, energy-saving and environmental protection. Therefore, it should be noted to develop the welding materials and equipments vigorously for this welding method. © 2013 Editorial Board of CHINA WELDING. Source

In accordance with the site construction of X60 pipeline steel at -20 °C, the mechanical properties, metallograpic structure, hardness, Charpy impact absorbing energy and the fracture structure of the girth welded joints of φ711 × 15.9 mm pipeline are analyzed. The results show that the highest HAZ hardness value of the X60 pipe steel joints girth-welding at -20 °C cryo-welding is 210 HV10 which meets related standards. The welding procedure specification has been used on the long-distance pipeline projects in China's northern area, which obtains satisfactory results: no hardened structures in the joints through metallurgical microscopic observation and the toughness of the joints meeting the requirement of related technical standards through microscopic observation of the cross section of the Charpy test sample.
