The Carboniferous Zhibo and Chagangnuoer iron deposits are situated within a caldera centre and along the flank of the same volcanic edifice, respectively, in the Awulale Iron Metallogenic Belt of the Western Tianshan orogen. Several stratiform 10 to 100 m large, tabular to lenticular shaped magnetite-dominated ore-bodies occur in (trachy-) andesitic to rhyolitic host rocks. The magnetite mineralization mainly occurs as massive iron ores, partly with columnar-network or flow textures, and as disseminated magnetite ores. Trace element and isotope investigations of the different ore types reveal two major groups of magnetite: Group I, represented by the massive, partly brecciated ores from both deposits, is enriched in Ti, V, Ni, and HFSE such as Y, with concentrations similar to Iron Oxide-Copper-Gold (IOCG) ores. The δ56Fe values (up to 0.4‰) support an ortho-magmatic origin corresponding with an isotopic source calculation at ~ 800 °C. Positive correlations between Fetotal and δ56Fe (from + 0.4‰ to − 0.1‰) and incompatible trace element contents (e.g. Si, Al, Nb, Ti and Y) in Group I magnetite are interpreted to be the consequence of a Raleigh-type fractionation process. Decreasing V, Ni and Mn values indicate changing fO2 conditions at the time of ore genesis. Group II, which is represented by the disseminated ores from Chagangnuoer, is - compared to Group I - relatively depleted in elements like Ti, V, Ni and Y and further spans a dominant δ56Fe range from about 0‰ to − 0.5‰. These textural and chemical characteristics and the garnet-actinolite-diopside-epidote-carbonate-K-feldspar paragenesis are in accordance with hydrothermal Fe-skarn ores. The similar multi-element patterns of magnetite from all investigated samples, the overlapping δ56Fe ratios of the same massive ore-type from Zhibo and Chagangnuoer and the close proximity of both deposits indicate a common source of Fe-enrichment for the different iron ore types. In contrast to the ortho-magmatic Group I magnetite, reverse trace element trends with decreasing δ56Fe ratios (from 0‰ to − 0.5‰) among the disseminated ores cannot simply be explained by a straightforward Raleigh fractionation or alteration processes. Therefore, a bimodal formation model is suggested for the Group II magnetite formation, including a partial remobilization of iron from the proximal, ortho-magmatic ore bodies and a subsequent distal re-precipitation. These processes were driven by late-stage hydrothermal fluids, which originated from deeper- seated granitic/granodioritic intrusions in the immediate vicinity. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Yidun Terrene is located in the northern-central segment of Sanjiang Tethys metallogenic domain, developing massive Late Triassic and Late Cretaceous felsic magmatism and related porphyry-skarn Mo-Cu-polymetallic mineralization. The Tongchanggou deposit is a newly discovered porphyry-skarn type Mo-Cu deposit in the southern Yidun Terrane, with proven reserves of 142. 5 Mt. Skarn extensively exposed in the Tongchanggou district, with skarn-type ore being the most important ore type. Based on the mineral assemblages and paragenesis, Tongchanggou skarn can be divided into garnet skarn, diopside skarn and tremolite skarn. Detailed adit mapping and drill-hole logging suggest that the skarn mineralogy at Tongchanggou is controlled by the spatial distribution of granodiorite and marble: 1) it develops diopside skarn → tremolite skarn → garnet skarn upward or downward from the marble, 2) the grain size of garnet turns to be larger from top to bottom along the drill-hole, and 3) Mo-Cu mineralization is associated with retrograde altered minerals such as tremolite and epidote, thus orebody usually develop in the outer contact zone between granodiorite and marble. The dominant garnet at Tongchanggou occurs as euhedral grain or granular aggregates, and is dark and isotropical. The compositions of garnet are mainly grossularite (62. 2 ∼ 78. 3), followed by and radite (16.7 ∼ 34. 2), with minor spessartite, almandine and pyrope. The Fe2+/Fe3+ ratios of garnet from Tongchanggou deposit are varying from 0. 00 to 0. 20, with an average value of 0. 06, indicating a relatively oxidative environment for the formation of garnet. The δ18 OSMOW values of garnet are ranging between 5.1%‰ and 9. 5%‰, indicating that skarn might have directly inherited the oxygen isotope compositions of granodiorite. Additionally, sulfides are characterized by uniform S-Pb isotopes, with δ34 S(CDT) valuesof 0. l%‰ ∼ 1. 4%‰, 206Pb/204 Pb ratios of 18. 332 ∼ 18. 694, 208Pb/204 Pb ratios of 38. 454 ∼ 39. 088, and 207Pb/204 Pb ratios of 15. 588 ∼ 15. 663, indicating that the ore-forming fluids and materials of Tongchanggou deposit originated from crust-derived felsic magmas.

Mn-Ti oxides in Si-Mn-Ti deoxidized steels after cooling in the furnace were investigated. The composition and morphology of inclusions were analyzed by using FE-SEM with EDS. Mn-Ti oxides were found to be effective sites to induce intragranular ferrite formation. The thermodynamic calculation was employed to interpret the critical condition for Mn-Ti oxide formation. Mn-Ti oxide formation was controlled not only by Mn and Ti content, but also by total oxygen content in steel. When the Mn and Ti contents were around 1.5% and 0.005%-0.01%, respectively, Mn-Ti oxide could form as the total oxygen content was 0.001%-0.002%. The experimental results were in good agreement with thermodynamic calculation results. Also, MnS solubility was examined in Mn-Ti oxide inclusion system. With an increase of MnO content in Mn-Ti oxide, MnS solubility in the oxides increased. MnS precipitation benefited from high MnO content in Mn-Ti oxide. © 2010 Central Iron and Steel Research Institute.
