As a 358 m mega-high-rise building, Sino Steel (Tianjin) International Plaza first uses hexagonal grid structure system as its exterior tube. Based on the research results that the hexagonal grid structure is strong to withstand horizontal loadings whereas weak in vertical loading resistance, the following structure design key techniques are put forward: (1) all steel floor beams are pinned to connect the core and exterior tube and outriggers are not adopted to adapt to the deformation differences and reduce the overturn moments of exterior tube; (2) make sure that horizontal beams sections are less than columns sections (six edges members sections not equal); (3) reduce the inclined angle of corner columns (six inner angles not equal); (4) adopt varied sections for slant columns (slant columns sections not equal); (5) adopt effective stiffness for steel beam studs; (6) propose special construction measures to avoid the transfer of self weight from middle structures to corner ones.
