Waterborne PU/silica (WPUS) composites were synthesized by the co-hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) at m(precursors)/m(WPU) of 1.0 in the presence of anionic waterborne PU dispersion. Influence of n(MTES)/n(TEOS) on the average particle size of WPUS composite emulsion, morphology of emulsion particles, surface morphology and water resistance of composite films was investigated by particle size analyzer, transmission electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, contact angle measuring device and water absorption test, respectively. With increasing of n(MTES)/n(TEOS) from 0 to 1.5, average particle size of emulsion decreases gradually from 130 nm to 107 nm; the distribution of silica on the surface of films becomes more uniformly and surface roughness decreases; water contact angle increases and water absorption decreases. Silica particles with irregular shape are distributed non-uniformly without addition of MTES, whereas they are distributed uniformly with regular sphere shape after addition of MTES.

Fatliquors are some of the most effective chemicals to impart softness and flexibility to leather, and low temperature softness of leather is very important for the application of leather in a low temperature environment. The main objective of the present work is to compare low temperature softness of leather lubricated with various types of fatliquors. In this work, a softness tester and dynamic mechanical analysis were used to investigate the softness variation of leather which was lubricated with different types of fatliquors, such as polyether silicone, sulphonated rapeseed oil, modified soybean lecithin and so on, at temperatures within the range of -15°C to 25°C. The results indicate that the smallest variation in softness ratio is shown by polyether oil lubricated leather and imply that silicone oil is superior to sulphonated rapeseed oil and modified lecithin for manufacturing a leather with excellent low temperature softness. Therefore there is great value in effectively utilizing silicone oil as a main component in fatliquoring agents to meet the new growing demand for low temperature softness of leather. © 2014, Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists. WPU/silica hybrid materials with different content of silica were synthesized by the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of anionic WPU dispersion. Influence of m(TEOS)/m(WPU) on the morphology of WPU/silica (WPUS) hybrid emulsion particles, surface morphology, glass transition temperature (Tg) and transmittance of hybrid films were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, dynamic mechanical analyzer and UV-visible spectrophotometer, respectively. When m(TEOS)/m(WPU) was less than 0.50, the silica particle of the hybrid emulsion was distributed uniformly in nanoscale level, and the Tg of soft segment of WPU increases. Whereas the Tg of soft segment of WPU decreases, the particle size of silica increases gradually to more than 200 nm, and the silica particles tend to form a continuous phase when m(TEOS)/m(WPU) increases from 1.00 to 2.00. The surface roughness increases and transmittance in the visible zone decreases when m(TEOS)/m(WPU) was not higher than 1.00, the converse was true when that was above 1.00.

The multiple hydrogen-bonded unit containing polymer was synthesized by using acyclic diene metathesis polymerization of oligoamide monomer with Grubbs-type olefin metathesis catalysts. The polymer was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography and scanning electron microscope. The results demonstrate the successful synthesis of novel polymer via acyclic diene metathesis polymerization and the hydrogen-bonding-assisted formation of aggregates. © 2014, Chemical Publishing Co.
