Feizhu powder, which is a classical Chinese medicine prescription collected in the Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia, comprises four kinds of Chinese herbs: Rhizoma dryopteridis crassirhizomatis, Radix polygoni multiflori (prepared), Fructus hordei germinatus and Soybean (fry). According to dose proportion in the prescription and preparation method collected in the Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia, we have prepared the Feizhu powder. In order to research the antibacterial activity in vitro of homemade Feizhu powder, it was extracted with 95% ethanol and water, respectively. Then minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract was detected against Streptococcus suis, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by micro porous-plate method. The results showed that MICs of Feizhu powder water extract ranged from 250 mg/mL to 500 mg/mL. While MICs of Feizhu powder alcohol extract ranged from 31.25 mg/mL to 62.5 mg/mL. The test data indicated that antimicrobial activity of Feizhu powder alcohol extract is superior to that of water extract, this lay the foundation for the extract of the antibacterial active ingredients and further research on Feizhu powder. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland. Agaricus brunnescens is a producer for novel biomaterial (exopolysaccharide of Agaricus brunnescens). In this paper, the optimization of culture conditions for the biomass of Agaricus brunnescens through orthogonal methods was reported. The optimal conditions for enhancing production was: inoculum size 10 %, broth volume 100 mL in a 250 mL flask, pH 6.0. This optimization strategy in shake flask culture lead to an biomass 0.8 g/L, which was considerably higher than that obtained in preliminary studied. Source

The principal component analysis (PCA) and fuzzy C-means (FCM) cluster were used in the optimization of flavomycin flask fermentation process. The data dimension of flavomycin flask fermentation was reduced by the principal component analysis, and non-critical control parameters were cut down. The critical control parameters became the new input of fuzzy C-means cluster, and then the range of critical control parameters was optimized by fuzzy C-means cluster. The combined algorithm based on principal component analysis and fuzzy C-means cluster reduced the range of control parameter of flavomycin flask fermentation. The experimental results indicate that this combined algorithm is effective in the optimization of fermentation process. Source

Crude glycerol is a major byproduct of biodiesel manufacture, and can be fractionally distilled. We present here the microbial conversion of crude glycerol into 1, 3-propanediol by Klebsiella pneumoniae under micro-aerobic conditions. We evaluated the effects of pure and crude glycerol on microbial growth and resulting product through batch culture fermentation. In addition, we studied effect of fatty acid and methyl ester on fermentation. Comparison of final concentrations and 1, 3-propanediol molar yields indicate that the crude glycerol from biodiesel production can be used as cheap raw material in the production of 1, 3-propanediol by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Using pure glycerol, concentration reaches 81.10 g/L and yield is 0.62 mol/mol, while crude glycerol from biodiesel production yields 76.85g/L concentration and 0.57mol/mol yield. Fatty acid shows itself favorable for 1, 3-propanediol production, while methyl ester causes strong inhibition of 1,3-propanediol production. © 2016, Chiang Mai University. All rights reserved. Enramycin is a polypeptide antibiotic and new, safe animal feed additive. A new purification process was developed, based on pre-purification by macroporous resin and refining by reversed phase chromatography. AB-8 macroporous resin was used for the pre-purification process of enramycin, with an elution buffer of 0.012 mol/L aqueous HCl solution-methanol (50:50, V/V). Then, enramycin a and enramycin b were separated effectively by C18 reversed phase chromatography, with a elution buffer of 0.05 mol/L aqueous KH2PO4 solution-acetonitrile (70:30, V/V, pH 4.5). The purities of enramycin a and enramycin b were up to 98.5% and 98.0%, respectively. The yield reached 29.2%. This study would provide a useful reference for the preparation of enramycin a and enramycin b with ahigh purity. © 2014 Chin J Biotech, All rights reserved. Source
