For the vertical pouring bottom casting of gray iron cylinder block using resin sand cores assembling molding, the blowhole defects easily occur on top surface of pouring position, namely the top surface of cylinder block. The key points of preventive measures are as followed: in process design, exhaust tablets or rods are setup on the top surface of cylinder blocks and exhaust overflow launder was set up; the optimal venting channels are designed in water jacket core and oil passage cores, namely optimal vent wire setting. In selecting material of water jacket core and oil passage cores, the suitable size and strength of resin coat sands should be selected, and the ignition loss is as low as possible. Proper high pouring temperature and quick pouring speed etc. should be adopted. Source

The 3 types failure modes of resin sands were introduced: the time of resin sands used is larger than the time that resin sands can be used; moisture absorption and strength reduction of resin sand mould or core because of the mould or core was stored long time; resin sand mould or core rapidly lose strength and would happen deformation, cracking and breaking, when pouring. The failure of resin sand could lead to the casting defects as blasting sand and sand hole etc, these defects were caused by the strength reduction of resin sand mould or core. And the failure of resin sand could lead to the choke and blowhole, these were caused by resin sand moisture absorption. The casting deformation and the problem of casting size were caused by resin sand mould or core deformation. The control measures for the 3 types failure modes of resin sands were introduced. The leakage of CB10 cylinder block was caused by the shrinkage that can be seen only by microscope with the leakage testing and analyzing. The leakage could be solved by tellurium coating, but the sand penetration and burning-on were found on the place where it been brushedo Finally, the pure graphite coating is coated as basement, the reducing atmosphere was formed, the defects of sand penetration and sand adhesion were resolved effectively. The case to solve the blowhole defect of DK4 cylinder casting by developing the new precoated sand was presented. Through analyzing the reasons of the blowhole defect, structure and process of DK4 cylinder casting, a new precoated sand used in water jacket core of DK4 was developed. The new sand has the characteristics of low gas evolution and short gas time. The experiment and batch production show that TL-D1 can effectively reduce the DK4 cylinder's blowhole defect ratio and improve the quality of products. © 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. Aiming to the depression in the hot spot which is on the top surface of V22 cylinder block, various casting processing was tested and analyzed, including set of the air vent, feeder and chill. At last, the chill and feeder casting processing was adopted. The production was verified, the depression was effectually solved and the sound cylinder block castings were obtained with feeder and chill which covered 18% area of the hot spot. Source
