MOVs (motor operated valves) are used by the hundreds in power stations because they can be remotely operated. They are motor driven generally with integral gearboxes that can be grease lubricated. The same grease can also be used to lubricate the valve stem. Some of the important tribo components including the worm and stem nut are made of copper alloys. Some stations had reported OEs (operating events) because of excessive stem nut wear so the concern was whether the greases being used and the testing was adequate. For example, many of the standard wear tests use steel specimens which might not be suitable for the bronze stem nuts and stainless steel stems. Consequently the 52100 steel balls in ASTM D2266 were replaced with bronze and stainless steel balls.

Employment of polymer modifiers has been rapidly increasing and finding new applications due to their unique ability of giving rise to compatibility of chemically dissimilar materials in polymer composite and polymer blend system. Synergy effect of combination of dissimilar materials resulting from optimized compatibility offers effective and efficient solutions where one single material cannot. This paper focuses on advancement of polymer modifiers' applications.
