Thirty cultivare of wheat were carried out in randomized block design RBD for yield and yield contributing components during rabi 2007-08 to determine the mutual relationship between various components in bread wheat. The mean performance of individual cultivare was employed for analysis of variance to test the significance of each character. Significant genotypic difference was observed for 11 quantitative characters studied presenting considerable amount of variance among cultivare. The seed yield per plant (g) was very strong and had positive association with plant height (cm), number of tillers per plant, and number of grains per plant, while biological yield per plant was negative and significantly associated with grain yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis was used to identify direct and indirect effects of several components on grain yield. The path analysis observed highest positive direct effect on harvest index (%) and biological yield per plant (g) and indirect effect on weight per ear (g), followed by number of tillers per plant and plant height (cm) and negative direct effect on number of spikelets per spike. Direct group analysis constellation was formed using non-hierarchical D2 values for each character. All 30 genotypes were grouped into eight clusters. The cluster Vn contained maximum six cultivare followed by clusters ni and V. The maximum mean performance for test weight in clusters VH and V had highest mean performance for grain yield per plant, which can be utilized in the selection of suitable hybridization programme.
