Porous hydroxyapatite structures were manufactured via a novel preceramic paper process. Preceramic paper sheets were produced from aqueous suspensions loaded with different contents of pulp fiber and HA filler. Pressure loading was applied in order to increase the packing density in the paper sheets. The paper sheets were sintered at 1250 °C for 1 h. The porous ceramic specimens were characterized for density, porosity, microstructure and mechanical properties. A pronounced volumetric shrinkage was observed, but no surface flaws or inhomogeneous areas were detected. The mechanical strength using the ball on three balls test (B3B test) and elastic modulus of sintered specimens vary between 18 and 28 MPa and 0.65-1.53 GPa, respectively. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Porous β-TCP structures were manufactured via novel preceramic paper process. The paper sheets were sintered at 1200 °C for 2 h. The porous ceramic specimens were characterized for density, porosity, microstructure and mechanical properties. A pronounced volumetric shrinkage was observed, but no surface flaws or inhomogeneous areas were detected. The compressive strength and compressive modulus of sintered specimens vary between 6.55 and 5.62 MPa and 0.33-0.39 GPa, respectively. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Preceramic papers were produced for aqueous suspensions loaded with different contents of pulp fiber and BaG filler. Pressure loading was applied in order to increase the packing density in the paper sheets. The paper sheets were sintered at 630 °C for 1 h. The porous glass-ceramic specimens were characterized for density, porosity, composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. A pronounced volumetric shrinkage was observed, but no surface flaws or inhomogeneous areas were detected. The mechanical strength using the ball on three balls test and elastic modulus of sintered specimens vary between 21 and 33 MPa and 0.30-0.85 GPa, respectively. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are high temperature devices aimed to stationary heat and power generation. Compared to other fuel cells, SOFC present the highest efficiency, being flexible in relation to fuel characteristics and operation temperature range. Two sheets were laminated and laid: one in the cast direction and the other perpendicular to the cast direction. Stable slurries were prepared to produce defect-free and homogeneous green tapes in order to improve the performance of the electrolyte in the cell, increasing the ionic conductivity and the mechanical strength. When two or more sheets are laminated, perfect adhesion is required to form a homogeneous structure. An appropriate lamination process should provide homogeneous junctions between the layers. In electrolyte-supported SOFCs, the electrolyte which serves as a structural support, should have a high mechanical strength.

A composite material may be done in such a way that the final product may acquire some excellent properties that cannot be found individually in either material. Novel PLLA/HA multilayer composites are fabricated with different HA contents and sequence of stacking with the goal to produce devices for bone fracture fixation. Hydroxyapatite powder particles act as flaws in the continuous polymer matrix due to limited interfacial bonding with the polymer matrix and a limited effect on toughening mechanisms. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
