Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a genetic generalized epilepsy accounting for 3-12% of adult cases of epilepsy. Valproate has proven to be the first-choice drug in JME for controlling the most common seizure types: myoclonic, absence, and generalized tonic-clonic (GTC). In this retrospective study, we analyzed seizure outcome in patients with JME using valproate monotherapy for a minimum period of one year. Low valproate dose was considered to be 1000mg/day or lower, while serum levels were considered to be low if they were at or below 50mcg/dl. One hundred three patients met the inclusion criteria. Fifty-six patients (54.4%) were female. The current average age was 28.47.4years, while the age of epilepsy onset was 13.62.9years. Most patients corresponded to the subsyndrome of classic JME. Forty-six (44.7%) patients were free from all seizure types, and 76 (73.7%) patients were free from GTC seizures. No significant difference was found in seizure freedom among patients using a low dose of valproate versus a high dose (p=0.535) or among patients with low blood levels versus high blood levels (p=0.69). In patients with JME, it seems appropriate to use low doses of valproate (500mg to 1000mg) for initial treatment and then to determine if freedom from seizures was attained.

Exposing students to international experiences is becoming a common practice to prepare students with global capabilities. One pedagogical activity used to promote global competencies is the participation of students in multinational design projects. This is a problem-based learning approach in an international setting, where students get immersed in the solution of anengineering design task while they work in teams and collaborate with international partners. The main goal of these projects is to foster international collaboration and to offer an opportunity to the students to develop professional skills through international teamwork effort in the solution of a design problem. However, a real challenge of this practice has been to create an effective interaction among the students participating in this type of projects and to maintain the flow of information, and student engagement in the project and in their learning. The main objective of this work is to investigate the sociotechnical interaction of engineering students working in a multinational collaborative project and the role of information technology tools and the nature of the interaction in this experience. For this purpose an assessment tool was developed and used to determine the interaction among the students (frequency, quantity and quality), the value of social interaction in the flow of the interaction, and the impact of the interaction in the development of the project. The main findings of this instrument are presented in this work. © 2015 TEMPUS Publications.

For a country to become fully democratic, the majority of the population needs to be involved in the politics of that country. This requires people to be aware of what is happening, and to be able to participate in the country's political processes. VotoSocial is a crowdsourcing system launched during the 2013 Honduran government elections. It retrieved the official polling table records in digitized form from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (the Government's elections authority) and provided them to the Internet community to be counted and the digitizations verified. VotoSocial was thereby able to verify the accuracy of the official polling results. We found no evidence of fraud in the digitization process, but statistical analysis revealed a data behavior usually associated with incremental fraud in an electoral process. VotoSocial shows that social media-powered crowdsourcing systems can increase a population's political awareness during elections, thus providing a motive to build similar platforms in other countries with political systems marked by electoral fraud. © 2015 Policy Studies Organization.

The School of Engineering at Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) implemented, starting in the 2012–2013 period, a unified academic model based on project-based learning as the methodology used throughout the entire School. This model expects that every year, in each grade, all the students should participate in a capstone project integrating the contents and competencies of several courses. This paper presents the academic context under which this experience has been implemented, and a summary of the work done to design and implement the Project-Based Engineering School at the UEM. The steps followed, the structure used, some sample projects, as well as the difficulties and benefits of implementing the programme are discussed in this paper. The results are encouraging as students are more motivated and the initial set objectives were accomplished. © 2016 SEFI

Finding a genetic disease-related gene is not a trivial task. Therefore, computational methods are needed to present clues to the biomedical community to explore genes that are more likely to be related to a specific disease as biomarker. We present biomarker identification problem using gene prioritization method called gene prioritization from microarray data based on shortest paths, extended with structural and biological properties and edge flux using voting scheme (GP-MIDAS-VXEF). The method is based on finding relevant interactions on protein interaction networks, then scoring the genes using shortest paths and topological analysis, integrating the results using a voting scheme and a biological boosting. We applied two experiments, one is prostate primary and normal samples and the other is prostate primary tumor with and without lymph nodes metastasis. We used 137 truly prostate cancer genes as benchmark. In the first experiment, GP-MIDAS-VXEF outperforms all the other state-of-the-art methods in the benchmark by retrieving the truest related genes from the candidate set in the top 50 scores found. We applied the same technique to infer the significant biomarkers in prostate cancer with lymph nodes metastasis which is not established well. Copyright © 2012 Carlos Roberto Arias et al.

In view of having a precarious public health system, the Honduran population is with the needed to find alternatives to meet their health needs, this is particularly important for people with physical disabilities. For the San Felipe Public Hospital, which is the center of the country's largest prosthesis it is impossible to meet the demand, with about 1,800 people per year requiring a prosthetic limb, only in this center. In addition to high demand and shortage of materials, the center is dedicated exclusively to the production of above and below knee prosthesis, leaving aside prosthetic patients whose requirements are different. This is where the possibility of implementing prostheses made using 3D printers, which not only alleviate the arrears of prosthesis, but also reduce the price and time of creating them. Using this process the creation of hand prostheses becomes a viable possibility. This article aims to explain the procedure of this process and expose the advantages thereof, with particular emphasis on the feasibility and accessibility of hand prostheses in Honduras. © 2015 IEEE.

The demand for newer technologies in the recent years has led to an exponentially increase in energy consumption. One of the main topics in which the markets are demanding the manufacturers to focus in are safety international standards, and with a higher momentum when talking about electrical conductors. The latest trend in safety issued regarding the electrical conductors is manufacturing conductors with insulation free of halogen elements. Some of the compounds generally used for in inner conductors' (building wires) insulation are PVC and FEP in which the particles contain halogens such as chlorine, fluorine, bromine and iodine, elements belonging to Group 17 of the periodic table and, once in contact with fire, they emit toxic gases, opaque fumes, high acidity and corrosive materials spreading throughout their vicinity. This research shows how electronic messaging systems (EMS) are being used, increasingly frequently, by users of mobile services, the user preference for the different systems currently available of electronic messaging and type mobile devices being used as the means to send and receive text messages. The research is also intended to determine the preference of users to send a text message instead of making a normal phone call; simultaneously, includes an assessment of the public to know whether users found that SME are replacing formal communication. Quadriplegia is a condition caused by a degenerative disease or a sudden condition that causes loss of movement from the neck down. The inactivity of the upper and lower limbs makes it impossible to drive a manual or electric wheelchair, requiring another person to get around. In response to this issue was held a control device integrated in a manual wheelchair. The control system uses electrical signals generated by the human body (specifically on the face) that result in displacement of the wheelchair. Some diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have the effect of progressive muscle paralysis affecting the muscles related to verbal and written communication, so they are impossible to communicate with their family, for that reason we design an ocular keyboard that allows the user to write through eye movements. © 2015 IEEE.

Local search is a well-established mode of Web search engines today. For most developed countries, a huge amount of data is directly available on the Web and can be extracted and processed by search engines. In many developing countries, the Web coverage is much lower and only little information is directly available. To develop a Local Search that still can provide sufficient coverage, a hybrid mode of index construction has to be followed that identifies and integrates other sources of geospatial information to increase the coverage. The location part can be exceptionally difficult, as imprecise addresses and low-coverage geocoders do not allow precise coordinates to be used in mapping. We present an approach that is designed to increase coverage and precision. We use the example of Honduras, a country in Latin American, to describe the approach and potential data sources. © 2012 IEEE.
