We rigorously establish a physical time scale for a general class of kinetic Monte Carlo algorithms for the simulation of continuous-time Markov chains. This class of algorithms encompasses rejection-free (or BKL) and rejection (or "standard") algorithms. For rejection algorithms, it was formerly considered that the availability of a physical time scale (instead of Monte Carlo steps) was empirical, at best. Use of Monte Carlo steps as a time unit now becomes completely unnecessary. © 2011 American Physical Society. Source


The concept of a "Strain aging induced anisotropy in mechanical properties", proposed by Richards et al. [Mater. Sci. Eng. A 529 (2011) 184], is shown to be misleading. Anisotropy of strain aging kinetics is proposed as a possible source of confusion. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Source

The effect of the yield (Y) to tensile (T) ratio Y/T on the structural integrity of linepipes with part through the thickness longitudinal defects subject to internal pressure was studied in this work. A model based on elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and plasticity theory was developed for that purpose. The analysis allows for load or deformation control situations. The results are shown in terms of curves of critical defect size versus the controlling variable, i.e., load or deformation. For each one of the several materials studied, different cases with different Y/T values were considered. Even for the lower limits of experimental data, i.e., larger Y/T, the materials have adequate defect tolerance. © 2011 American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Source

Ternium Siderar has recently installed a commercial sensor that measures the sound originated during blowing. A proper analysis of this signal may give valuable information about the slopping tendency of the heat. Data from more than 4000 heats were collected and thoroughly analyzed. The influences of the materials charged and of their compositions on the slag slopping tendency were investigated. Based on these results, an application to evaluate the risk of slopping for given process conditions was developed. © EDP Sciences. Source
