A silver coating takes the lead in the SERS enhancement contest for nanorod supercrystals. On page 477, A. Guerrero-Martínez, L. M. Liz-Marzán, and co-workers determine that supercrystals based on standing core-shell gold-silver nanorods stabilized by gemini surfactants are the SERS champions, knocking out their gold nanorod supercrystal counterparts. After a tough competition, silver substrates show a perfect combination of high optical activity and large homogeneous sensing area that will be difficult to defeat. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report a procedure to prepare highly monodisperse copper telluride nanocubes, nanoplates, and nanorods. The procedure is based on the reaction of a copper salt with trioctylphosphine telluride in the presence of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide and oleylamine. CuTe nanocrystals display a strong near-infrared optical absorption associated with localized surface plasmon resonances. We exploit this plasmon resonance for the design of surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensors for unconventional optical probes. Furthermore, we also report here our preliminary analysis of the use of CuTe nanocrystals as cytotoxic and photothermal agents. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The fabrication of highly luminescent, chemically stable and biocompatible small optical probes is of key interest in bioimaging. Herein we develop a multistep synthesis of hybrid superstructures that comprise quantum dot cores and dense layers of gold nanoparticles separated by a silica shell. This architecture allows for the versatile control of the QD-metal interactions by controlling the thickness of the dielectric spacer. The shell thickness is optimized at the nanometer scale in order to increase the enhanced photoluminescence. Further characterization of the emission in the single particle regime shows that our brighter particles require smaller acquisition times to yield better imaging results. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2013.

Modern-day wonders of the world: Nanostructured films of plasmonic pyramid arrays (see picture) were prepared by the simple stamping of preformed homogeneous nanocolloids. The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of a continuous monitoring system for the analysis of the mass concentration of PCDD/Fs from stationary sources. Data was acquired from a modern, state of the art, hazardous waste thermal treatment plant for a period of more than 2years using a commercial available continuous monitoring system. The study consisted of a total of 16 samples, collected in periods from 1 week to 2months resulting in an average of 360m 3 sampled flue gas per sample. The study showed the system was able to confirm that for a period of more than 2years the plant was complying with the limit of 0.1ng I-TEQ/Nm 3. In addition, the data showed the typical fingerprint of such installations which is useful for example in impact studies. Long-term samples were compared to five short-term samples (6h) collected every 6months during the study period. Principal component analysis was applied to PCDD/Fs obtained data as useful statistical tool to find out trends and similarities between different samples. Improvement in terms of representativeness of data was achieved through continuous assessment since the starts of the project. The obtained data was further used to determine the emission factor for this activity and the total annual PCDD/Fs release to the atmosphere. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
