In this study, 2-(o-Hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole (HPB) was synthesized, characterized and tested as a new corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1M HCl solution. Weight-loss, Spectrophotometric and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were applied to analyse the metal corrosion behaviour in the absence and presence of different concentrations of the inhibitor. Results obtained revealed that this compound has fairly good inhibiting properties for mild steel corrosion in 1M HCl solution, with efficiency of around 93 % at a concentration of 500 μM. The inhibition was of a mixed anodic-cathodic nature with predominance of anodic character. The film which is formed over the metal surface was analysed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Further examination using X-ray diffraction confirms the role of HPB as an effective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid media. © 2012 by ESG. Source

In this study, 5-naphthylazo-8-hydroxyquinoline (5NA8HQ) was synthesized, characterized, and tested as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 M HCl solution in the temperature range 20 to 50 °C. Weight-loss and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were used to analyse the corrosion behaviour of the metal in the absence and presence of different concentrations of the inhibitor. Analyses of surface film and inhibited solutions by FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy enabled us to clarify aspects of the inhibition mechanism. Further examination using X-ray diffraction confirmed the action of 5NA8HQ as an effective inhibitor of corrosion of mild steel in acidic media. The results obtained showed that this compound was a good inhibitor of corrosion. The inhibition is of mixed anodic- cathodic nature with predominance of anodic character. The Langmuir isotherm was found to accurately describe the adsorption behaviour of 5NA8HQ. Spectrophotometric analysis showed the formation of a layer at the surface of the corroded sample; this was interpreted as formation of complexes between 5NA8HQ and metal cations present in the steel structure. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2012. The inhibiting properties of four diazole derivatives namely 2,2'-ethylene-bis(benzimidazole) (EBBI), 2,2'-buthylene-bis(benzimidazole) (BBBI), 2,2'-hexamethylene-bis(benzimidazole) (HBBI) and 2,2'-octamethylene-bis(benzimidazole) (OBBI), against the corrosion of mild steel in solutions of hydrochloric acid has been studied by various corrosion monitoring techniques and reported here for the first time. Preliminary screening of the inhibition efficiency was carried out using weight loss measurements. At the inhibitor concentration range of 10-5-5×10-4 M) in 1 M HCl, the inhibitor efficiency increases with concentration of the organic substrate. Potentiodynamic polarization studies showed that these compounds suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl by adsorption on the metal surface according to Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The values of free energies of adsorption (ΔG0 ads) suggest a mixed physisorptions and chemisorption of diazole molecules on the steel surface. The inhibition efficiency of these inhibitors increases in the order OBBI > HBBI > BBI > EBBI. © 2010 Desalination Publications. Source

Leave of Punica granatum extract (LPGE) as green inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel in 1M HCl solution was studied using weight-loss and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The results obtained revealed that LPGE has fairly good inhibiting properties for mild steel corrosion in 1M HCl solution, with efficiency of around 94 % at a concentration of 1g/l. The inhibition was of a mixed anodic-cathodic nature. The film which is formed over the metal surface was analysed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Further examination using X-ray diffraction confirms the role of LPGE as an effective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid media. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013.
