An attempt has been made to carry out a screening on the antibacterial activity of leaves of Crateva religiosa Forst used in Benin traditional veterinary medicine against bacterial infection of Thryonomys swinderianus (class of Mammalia, family of Thryonomyidae) commonly called agouti or kholan. The aim of this study was to select the most active extracts and fractions which may be useful to combat these bacterial infections. Seven extracts from C. religiosa were screened for their antibacterial. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by both microtest method using p-iodonitrotetrazolium and bioautography against five microorganisms obtained from T. swinderianus (Escherichia coli, Shigella sonei, Staphylococcus aureus, Pasteurela pestis and Yersinia enterocolitica). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the total activity (TA) were determined. All extracts were effective against tested microorganisms at different levels (0.31 ≤ MIC ≤ 10 mg/ml). The screening experiment revealed that ethyl acetate extract was more potent than other extracts with the MIC values of 0.62 mg/ml against E. coli and 0.31 mg/ml against S. aureus, S. sonei, P. pestis and Y. enterocolitica. The results provide an evidence for the traditional use of C. religiosa for the treatment of infective diseases of T. swinderianus Temminck. © 2011 Academic Journals. Source

The effect of two growth regulator combinations was studied on the morphogenesis in vitro of 3 genotypes of yams (Kounondakou, Gnon-boya and RB 89579). Benzyl aminopurin (BAP) and zeatin (ZEAT) were tested, respectively at a concentration of 0.5 mg/l with the galzy glutamine basic medium containing naphtalene acetic acid (NAA) (0.5 mg/l). Stem fragments were used as explants. The number of stripped buds and explants having stem and roots are sampled after 2 weeks in culture. The dry matter content, the number of roots and leaves and the height of each young sprout were determined after 5 weeks in culture. The results obtained indicated that no break in leaf growth was observed on the control medium (without cytokinin) but media with BAP and zeatin presented a good plants aerial part development. A significant interaction (p < 0.05) was observed between the genotypes and the type of cytokinin. However, the highest bud sprouting and shoot development were obtained with BAP. Thus, BAP can be considered as cytokinin having a good morphogenic aptitude when compared to zeatin for yam micropropagation. © 2010 Academic Journals. Source

Under the action of marine currents, non-cohesive sediments evolve by bed-load, by saltation or suspension depending on their granulometry. Several authors have considered that the movement of sediment is bidimensional and modelized the effects of swell by a constant velocitynear the seabed. Here we have studied the velocity profile of fluctuating currents near the seabed and studied the movement of sediment in 3D. The results show that in the areas of study (surf and swash) the movement of sediment occurs in a volume, and the evolution of sediment varies from an areato another. The obtained theoretical profiles of the position and velocity vectors confirm the observations of several authors. © 2015, The Chinese Society of Oceanography and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
