The simultaneous determination of 17 free amino acids and 8 biogenic amines in Alicante Monastrell wines was investigated for the first time. The quantification was carried out by using a RP-HPLC method, based on a pre-column derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) and fluorescence detection. From the results obtained it may be concluded that the most abundant free amino acids were Glu, Arg, Ala Asp, and Lys. None of the wine samples analysed had histamine (HIM) or Tyramine (TYM) levels above the limits considered as a possible toxic risk for healthy individuals. No measurable amounts of cadaverine (CAD) or methylamine (MEA) were found, showing no spoilage symptoms of sensory properties of the wines. Tryptamine (TRM) content was significantly higher in aged wines compared to young wines. However ethanolamine (ETA) content was lower. These data were used to make a preliminary classification of the samples using cluster analysis. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Source

To date, a psychometrically sound standardized Spanish-language test of confrontation naming has not been developed for clinical use. Because of the shortcomings of adapting tests developed in other cultures, it was decided to develop a confrontation naming test suitable for Spanish-speakers. For the validity study the performance on the test of 26 control subjects between 70 and 87 years old and 23 subjects with a mild to moderate degree of dementia of the Alzheimer type was compared. Stability of the test was assessed with a test-retest design (n = 80). Norms were developed using a regression-based method. Four hundred and fifty-six Spanish-speaking subjects of both sexes were recruited for the normative sample. Subjects were between 14 and 94 years old, and three educational levels were represented. Mean differences between the control and dementia groups were significant, yielding a large effect size (η2 =.25). The test-retest correlation coefficient was r =.90. Education, age, and gender significantly influenced test scores. The validity study confirmed that the test discriminates between individuals with and without anomia. The magnitude of the reliability coefficient of this test can be considered as "very high". Norms were developed considering the influence of three demographic variables: gender, age, and education. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC. Source

Current Allergy and Asthma Reports | Year: 2011

Childhood asthma is a widespread health problem because of its epidemic prevalence, as asthma affects more than 300 million people worldwide. Results from cross-sectional and cohort studies show that asthma starts in childhood in a large proportion of cases. A proper diagnosis is easier to make in adults and school-age children, as permanent changes in lung development, the strong impact of environmental factors on the airways, the immunologic maturity process, and the use of some diagnostic tools make asthma more difficult to diagnose in preschool children. This period of a child's life is an interesting challenge for pediatricians and specialists. The aim of the present review is to analyze the current knowledge regarding making an early and accurate asthma diagnosis and therefore deciding on the correct treatment to gain control over asthma symptoms and minimize health risks. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
