We report on periodic, homogenous nanoripples fabricated on stainless steel (SS), copper (Cu) and aluminium (Al) substrates using an ytterbium pulsed femtosecond laser. These structures called Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) are processed at a relatively high-speed allowing us to fabricate quasi regular nanoripples in a short time over large areas. This paper investigates the effect of LIPSS on wettability behavior of SS, Cu and Al surfaces. It is shown that nanoripples significantly influenced the wettability character of these metals turning them from hydrophilic to hydrophobic behavior. The most notable behavioral change is observed for SS and Al, where strong hydrophobicity is observed after the generation of LIPSS. Copyright © 2016 by ASME.

Industrial wastes may produce leachates that can contaminate the aquatic ecosystem. Toxicity testing in acute and chronic levels is essential to assess environmental risks from the soluble fractions of these wastes, since only chemical analysis may not be adequate to classify the hazard of an industrial waste. In this study, ten samples of solid wastes from textile, metal-mechanic, and pulp and paper industries were analyzed by acute and chronic toxicity tests with Daphnia magna and Vibrio fischeri. A metal-mechanic waste (sample MM3) induced the highest toxicity level to Daphnia magna (CE 50,48h =2.21 %). A textile waste induced the highest toxicity level to Vibrio fischeri (sample TX2, CE 50,30min =12.08 %). All samples of pulp and paper wastes, and a textile waste (sample TX2) induced chronic effects on reproduction, length, and longevity of Daphnia magna. Endoparasites associated with the small bromelicolous lizard Bogertia lutzae, a poorly studied phyllodactylid inhabitant of north-eastern Brazil, were studied. Fifty-seven specimens collected from the Atlantic Forest of Alagoas state were dissected. Only one species of parasite, the nematode Spauligodon oxkutzcabiensis, was found, with a prevalence of 22.8%. The intensity of infection was 2.621.19, and neither the prevalence nor mean intensity differed between the sexes. There was no correlation between lizard body size and intensity of infection. An aggregated pattern of distribution (D=0.813) of S. oxkutzcabiensis was found in this lizard host population. Bogertia lutzae represents a new host recorded for S. oxkutzcabiensis, a parasite reported for the first time for Brazil. © Cambridge University Press 2009.

We report the Raman spectroscopic characterization of a SNAB glass system doped with neodymium and CdS nanocrystals and fabricated by the fusion process. Raman spectra revealed CdS nanocrystals in the glass host and bands associated with Si-O vibrational modes with five structural configurations, boroxol modes of B2O3, Al-O and Cd-S vibrational modes. Additionally, Nd2O3 modifies the growth of CdS nanocrystals in the SNAB glass and Nd3+ ions are not incorporated inside the semiconductor nanocrystals. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an nonlinear load emulator for testing AC power supplies and power equipment with energy regeneration capability. The structure is based on back to back three-phase PWM voltage source inverter (VSI). To achieve power balance, an independent control strategy for both PWM VSI is proposed. Experimental results are presented to verify the emulator performance draining a linear and nonlinear current from an autotransformer and regenerating the energy to the utility grid. © 2011 IEEE.
