An analytical review of data on general-purpose grayed cast iron with different forms of graphite (lamellar, vermicular, globular, flaked) is presented. Grades of cast iron, their compositions, special features of structure of the graphite, and properties of gray, high-strength and malleable irons are described. The hardenability parameter is used for characterizing structure formation in a steel under different cooling conditions including normalizing and annealing. A concept of equivalent cooling rate is introduced to represent the rate of cooling for a specific structure. The effect of the hardenability parameter on the equivalent cooling rates corresponding to different structures (martensite, half-martensite, and ferrite-pearlite-bainite with various combinations of the components) is analyzed. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The stability of nanodisperse additives developed for ceramic construction materials obtained as a result of ultrasonic dispersion of metakaolin in the water media of organic stabilizers (S-3 superplasticizer and polyvinyl alcohol) is investigated. The dependence of the size of the metakaolin particles and the zeta potential of disperse phases of nanodisperse additives on the ultrasonic dispersion time and the form of the stabilizer is determined. It is shown that nanodisperse additives are effective for improving the physical-technical characteristics of ceramic stone. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media New York

We study the operating conditions, mechanisms, and regularities of wear of the surfaces of the friction units of chippers. We recorded a complex set of phenomena in the friction zone of the cutter shaft (or the cutting drum) and wood, which reveals the predominance of the corrosion-mechanical type of wear. It is shown that water, carboxylic acids, and polyphenol compounds most strongly affect the character of wear and wear rate. The mechanical component of wear in friction against wood is caused by the entrainment of dispersed wear particles in the contact zone, the appearance of abrasive particles (earth, sand, and clay) together with machined wood, or the penetration of these particles in the junctions of the chipper from the outer medium. The influence of hydrogenation of the surface on the wear resistance of the material of the components of woodworking machinery is established. We analyze the regularities and mechanisms of wear of the components of the friction units of chippers, formulate the requirements to the choice of the method of improvement the wear resistance, and theoretically justify the structural-phase composition and the physicochemical properties of the surface layer of the analyzed components. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Apart of a complex study of the effect of nickel on structure formation in iron-base alloys is presented. An accurate enough phase diagram for alloys of the Fe - Ni system is still lacking. Compilation of the data of some works and subsequent analysis of the known anomalies of structure and properties in alloys of the system are used by the author for correcting the phase diagram. The corrected diagram is used to explain the special features of Fe - Ni alloys, the well-known "invar" effect in particular. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
